ചോലക്കാടുകളിലും പുൽമേടുകളിലും മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്നതിനാൽ ചോലരാജൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.[1][2][3][4] പൊതുവെ ഉയർന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ആവാസം.ആനവിരട്ടി(Girardinia diversifolia) എന്ന ചെടിയാണ് ലാർവകൾ പ്രധാനമായും ഭക്ഷണത്തിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
