Alleged official flag
I am sorry I don't speak or write Malayalam. I suppose that Malayalam-speakers are able to judge whether the image that a single user has pasted on many Wikipedias with a claim that it represents the official flag of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church (സിറോ മലബാർ സഭ) is genuine or not. What grounds are there for saying that the Church in question, unlike other Churches, has adopted an official flag? Is it possible that someone has spammed over the Wikipedia family an image that is merely that person's own invention?
Should it at least be marked with a "citation needed" template? Theodoxa (സംവാദം) 15:59, 23 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2019 (UTC)
- @Theodoxa: There is no official confirmation about this flag as their official one. But they are used it on most places. A Citation is a must to confirm this. You can put the notice. --രൺജിത്ത് സിജി {Ranjithsiji} ✉ 15:33, 24 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2019 (UTC)
- -ഉപയോക്താവ്:Ranjithsiji, thank you. I have tried to edit the page, so as to insert a query on the lines of "Alleged flag [അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്] -- Cf. വിക്കിപീഡിയ:പഞ്ചായത്ത്#Alleged official flag". But I have not succeeded. I haven't found how to save an edit. Perhaps because, even apart from my ignorance of Malayalam, I am accustomed to use only "Edit source". Theodoxa (സംവാദം) 20:49, 24 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2019 (UTC)
- Theodoxa, if you get stuck in the visual mode, you can switch to wikitext. There's a pencil icon on the far edge of the toolbar that will let you choose between visual and wikitext modes.
- You can also set the language for the user interface in Special:Preferences (first screen, section section) or in Special:GlobalPreferences if you'd like it to apply to all sites. Then you'll actually see "Edit" and/or "Edit source" as options, in English. Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 04:17, 1 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF). I have tried to append to the image of the flag in ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി അതിരൂപത the Malayalam template corresponding to {{citation needed}}, which I perhaps wrongly believe is [അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്]. Preview showed no difference that I could discern (the very reason why I thought visual editing did not work), but I went ahead and saved my edit.
- Since what I (again, perhaps wrongly) believe to be a baseless insertion into Wikipedia by a Malayalam speaker, I think it is up to the Malayalam Wikipedia to solve the problem. The author used the name Syromalabar52 to insert it in Malabar Church Unofficial Flag.jpg Wikimedia Commons and then inserted it in the Wikipedias of many languages. Someone (not me, even under another name) has recently removed all the many insertions into the English Wikipedia. I myself have removed it from several other Wikipedias, especially after being informed here that "there is no official confirmation about this flag as their official one". But from now on, I leave dealing with the question to others.
- Syromalabar52 also posted in Wikipedia Commons two images of Syromalabar prelates into which he had pasted his flag. Then, using the IP 223.237.149.227 belonging to Bharti Tele Ventures Ltd in Bangalore, he inserted the first into ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി and the second into en:Lawrence Mukkuzhy. A different Indian IP was used to insert the flag into various other Wikipedias. Theodoxa (സംവാദം) 13:46, 2 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)
- I don't know what editing tools you're using. You used Preview, and you said it was visual editing, but there is no Preview in the visual editor. Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 17:29, 11 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)
- You are right and I was wrong.
- I still see no effect of my (ignorant) attempts to attach a "citation needed" tag to the image of the supposed official flag in And there has been no consideration by the Malayalam-Wikipedia community of the genuineness or falsity of the claim about the image. Theodoxa (സംവാദം) 06:52, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)
- I believe that you would just edit the page in any wikitext editor, find the image's caption, and paste this at the end of it:
{{തെളിവ്}}
Then save the page. Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 22:34, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)- I thank you warmly for your kind practical help. Theodoxa (സംവാദം) 06:47, 13 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)
- I don't know what editing tools you're using. You used Preview, and you said it was visual editing, but there is no Preview in the visual editor. Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 17:29, 11 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)

Section editing in the visual editor, on the mobile site
Please help translate to your language
The Editing team has been working on two things for people who use the visual editor on the mobile site:
- mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Section editing: It should make it easy to make small changes to long articles.
- a loading overlay: to tell people that the editor is still loading. (Sometimes, if the editor is slow to start, then people think it crashed.)
Some editors here can see these changes now. Others will see them later. If you find problems, please leave a note on my talk page, so I can help you contact the team. Thank you, and happy editing! Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 04:11, 1 ഏപ്രിൽ 2019 (UTC)

Request for translation and continued maintenance of a Meta page: Wikimedia Community User Group Hong Kong
Hello, guys,
I am WhisperToMe, a strategy coordinator for meta:Wikimedia Community User Group Hong Kong. In an effort to increase participation from Hong Kong's ethnic minority South Asian community, I am looking for Wikimedians interested in maintaining translations of the user group's pages in South Asian languages. If there are speakers of Malayalam interested in not only creating a translation of the page, but also continually maintaining it as changes are made, please give me a ping. I think this would be very useful for the city's South Asian community.
Happy editing, WhisperToMe (സംവാദം) 09:28, 1 മേയ് 2019 (UTC)

Project Tiger 2.0
Sorry for writing this message in English - feel free to help us translating it
Hello,
We are glad to inform you that Project Tiger 2.0/GLOW is going to start very soon. You know about Project Tiger first iteration where we saw exciting and encouraging participation from different Indian Wikimedia communities. To know about Project Tiger 1.0 please see this page
Like project Tiger 1.0, This iteration will have 2 components
- Infrastructure support - Supporting Wikimedians from India with internet support for 6 months and providing Chrome books.
- Article writing contest - A 3-month article writing contest will be conducted for Indian Wikimedians communities. Following community feedback, we noted some community members wanted the process of article list generation to be improved. In this iteration, there will be at least two lists of articles
- Google-generated list,
- Community suggested a list. Google generated list will be given to the community members before finalising the final list. On the other hand, the community may create a list by discussing among the community over Village pump, Mailing list and similar discussion channels.
Thanks for your attention,

- Hello everyone.
- Apologies if this message isn't in your language; please feel free to translate it. Last month we announced the Boost initiative to help wikis grow with translation. As a first step, we have enabled Content translation by default on Malayalam Wikipedia this week.
- Now it is easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation can disable it from their preferences.
- We expect this will help translators to create more content of good quality in Malayalam. We’ll be monitoring the statistics for Malayalam as well as the list of articles created with the tool. Content translation provides quality control mechanisms to prevent the abuse of machine translation and the limits can be adjusted based on the needs of each community. Please, feel free to share your impressions about the content created and how the tool works for the community. This feedback is essential to improve the tool to better support your needs.
- Thanks! --Pginer-WMF (സംവാദം) 12:33, 21 ഒക്ടോബർ 2019 (UTC)

Project Tiger Article writing contest Jury Update
Hello all,
There are some issues that need to be addressed regarding the Juries of the Project Tiger 2.0 article writing contest. Some of the User has shown interest to be a jury and evaluate the articles created as the part of the writing contest. But they don't meet the eligibility criteria. Please discuss this aspect with the community, if the community feel that they have the potential to be a jury then we can go ahead. If not please make a decision on who can be the jury members from your community within two days. The community members can change the juries members in the later stage of the writing contest if the work done is not satisfactory or the jury member is inactive with the proper discussion over the village pump.
Regards,

Research Study on Indic-Language Wikipedia Editions (Participation Applications are Open)
ASK: I would really appreciate it if any community member could help translate this content to the local language। Thank you!
Research Study
Although cultural and linguistic diversity on the Internet has exploded, English content remains dominant. Surprisingly, this appears to be true even on Wikipedia which is driven by increasingly linguistically diverse groups of participants. Although Wikipedia exists in almost three hundred language versions, participation and content creation is not distributed proportional to readership—or even proportional to editors’ mother tongues. A widely discussed puzzle within studies of online communities is that some small language communities thrive while other similar communities fail.
I hope to study this dynamic in Indic-language Wikipedia communities. There are dozens of Wikipedias in Indian language versions. I hope to study the experiences of several Indic-language Wikipedia communities with different levels of success in building communities of online participants but with similar numbers of Internet-connected native speakers, that face similar technical and linguistic challenges, that have similar socio-economic and political conditions, and so on.
The results of this study will help provide design recommendations to help facilitate the growth of Indian Language communities. -- Sejal Khatri (talk)
Participate
We are looking for people interested in participating in this study!
In exchange for your participation, you will receive a ₹1430 gift card.
To join the study, you must be at least 18 years of age and must be an active member of your native Indic language Wikipedia. You should also feel comfortable having an interview discussion in Hindi or English.
Community Support and Feedback
I look forward to community's feedback and support!
Extension of Wikipedia Asian Month contest
In consideration of a week-long internet block in Iran, Wikipedia Asian Month 2019 contest has been extended for a week past November. The articles submitted till 7th December 2019, 23:59 UTC will be accepted by the fountain tools of the participating wikis.

Project Tiger updates - quality of articles
- Excuse us for writing in English, kindly translate the message if possible
Hello everyone,
It has been around 70 days since Project Tiger 2.0 started and we are amazed by the enthusiasm and active participation being shown by all the communities. As much as we celebrate the numbers and statistics, we would like to reinstate that the quality of articles is what matters the most. Project Tiger does not encourage articles that do not have encyclopedic value. Hence we request participants to take care of the quality of the articles submitted. Because Wikipedia is not about winning, it is about users collectively building a reliable encyclopedia.
Many thanks and we hope to see the energy going! (on behalf of Project Tiger team)

Wikimedia Movement Strategy: 2020 Community Conversations
Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings! Wishing you a very happy new year!
We have an update for the next steps of the Movement Strategy! We're preparing for a final round of community conversations with Wikimedia affiliates and online communities around a synthesized set of draft recommendations to start around late/mid January. In the meantime, recommendations’ writers and strategy team has been working on integrating community ideas and feedback into these recommendations. Thank you, for all of your contributions!
What's New?
The recommendations writers have been working to consolidate the 89 recommendations produced by the working groups. They met in Berlin a few weeks back for an in-person session to produce a synthesized recommendations document which will be shared for public comment around late/mid January. A number of common areas for change were reflected in the recommendations, and the writers assessed and clustered them around these areas. The goal was to outline the overall direction of the change and present one set that is clearly understood, implementable and demonstrates the reasoning behind each.
What's Next?
We will be reaching out to you to help engage your affiliate in discussing this new synthesized version. Your input in helping us refine and advance key ideas will be invaluable, and we are looking forward to engaging with you for a period of thirty days from late/mid January. Our final consultation round is to give communities a chance to "review and discuss" the draft recommendations, highlighting areas of support and concern as well as indicating how your community would be affected.
Please share ideas on how you would like to meet and discuss the final draft recommendations when they are released near Mid January whether through your strategy salons, joining us at global and regional events, joining online conversations, or sending in notes from affiliate discussions. We couldn't do this without you, and hope that you will enjoy seeing your input reflected in the next draft and final recommendations. This will be an opportunity for the movement to review and respond to the recommendations before they are finalized.
If possible, we'd love if you could feature a discussion of the draft recommendations at the next in-person meeting of your affiliate, ideally between the last week of January and the first week of February. If not, please let us know how we can help support you with online conversations and discussing how the draft recommendations fit with the ideas shared at your strategy salon (when applicable).
The input communities have shared so far has been carefully documented, analyzed, and folded into the synthesized draft recommendations. Communities will be able to see footnotes referencing community ideas. What they share again in January/February will be given the same care, seriousness, and transparency.
This final round of community feedback will be presented to the Board of Trustees alongside the final recommendations that will be shared at the Wikimedia Summit.
Warmly -- User:RSharma (WMF) 15:58, 4 ജനുവരി 2020 (UTC)

Wikimedia 2030: Movement Strategy Community conversations are here!
Dear Affiliate Representatives and community members,
The launch of our final round of community conversation is finally here! We are excited to have the opportunity to invite you to take part.
The recommendations have been published! Please take time over the next five weeks to review and help us understand how your organization and community would be impacted.
What Does This Mean?
The core recommendations document has now been published on Meta in Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, and Spanish. This is the result of more than a year of dedicated work by our working groups, and we are pleased to share the evolution of their work for your final consideration.
In addition to the recommendations text, you can read through key documents such as Principles, Process, and the Writer’s Reflections, which lend important context to this work and highlight the ways that the recommendations are conceptually interlinked.
We also have a brief Narrative of Change [5] which offers a summary introduction to the recommendations material.
How Is My Input Reflected In This Work?
Community input played an important role in the drafting of these recommendations. The core recommendations document reflects this and cites community input throughout in footnotes.
I also encourage you to take a look at our community input summaries. These texts show a further analysis of how all of the ideas you shared last year through online conversations, affiliate meetings, and strategy salons connect to recommendations. Many of the community notes and reports not footnoted in the core recommendations document are referenced here as evidence of the incredible convergence of ideas that have brought us this far.
What Happens Now?
Affiliates, online communities, and other stakeholders have the next five weeks to discuss and share feedback on these recommendations. In particular, we’re hoping to better understand how you think they would impact our movement - what benefits and opportunities do you foresee for your affiliate, and why? What challenges or barriers would they pose for you? Your input at this stage is vital, and we’d like to warmly invite you to participate in this final discussion period.
We encourage volunteer discussion co-ordinators for facilitating these discussions in your local language community on-wiki, on social media, informal or formal meet ups, on-hangouts, IRC or the village pump of your project. Please collect a report from these channels or conversations and connect with me directly so that I can be sure your input is collected and used. Alternatively, you can also post the feedback on the meta talk pages of the respective recommendations.
After this five week period, the Core Team will publish a summary report of input from across affiliates, online communities, and other stakeholders for public review before the recommendations are finalized. You can view our updated timeline here as well as an updated FAQ section that addresses topics like the goal of this current period, the various components of the draft recommendations, and what’s next in more detail.
Thank you again for taking the time to join us in community conversations, and we look forward to receiving your input. (Please help us by translating this message into your local language). Happy reading! RSharma (WMF) MediaWiki message delivery (സംവാദം) 21:31, 20 ജനുവരി 2020 (UTC)

The 2030 movement strategy recommendations are here!
Greetings! We are pleased to inform that the 2030 movement strategy recommendations have been published on Meta-wiki. Over the last two years, our movement has worked tirelessly to produce these ideas to change our shared future. Many of you participated in the online conversations, hosted strategy salons, attended regional events, and connected with us in-person at Wikimania. These contributions were invaluable, and will help make our movement stronger for years to come.
The finished set of 10 recommendations emphasizes many of our core values, such as equity, innovation, safety, and coordination, while tasking us jointly to turn this vision into a reality. These recommendations clarify and refine the previous version, which was published in January this year. They are at a high strategic level so that the ideas are flexible enough to be adapted to different global and local settings and will allow us to navigate future challenges. Along with the recommendations, we have outlined 10 underlying principles, a narrative of change, and a glossary of key terms for better context.
The recommendations are available in numerous languages, including Arabic, German, Hindi, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish for you to read and share widely. We encourage you to read the recommendations in your own time and at your own pace, either online or in a PDF. There are a couple of other formats for you to take a deeper dive if you wish, such as a one-page summary, slides, and office hours, all collected on Meta. If you would like to comment, you are welcome to do so on the Meta talk pages. However, please note that these are the final version of the recommendations. No further edits will be made. This final version of the recommendations embodies an aspiration for how the Wikimedia movement should continue to change in order to advance that direction and meet the Wikimedia vision in a changing world.
In terms of next steps, our focus now shifts toward implementation. In light of the cancellation of the Wikimedia Summit, the Wikimedia Foundation is determining the best steps for moving forward through a series of virtual events over the coming months. We will also be hosting live office hours in the next coming few days, where you can join us to celebrate the Strategy and ask questions! Please stay tuned, and thank you once again for helping to drive our movement forward, together. RSharma (WMF)

Regional Call for South Asia - Oct. 30
Hi everyone. The time has come to put Movement Strategy into work and we need your help. We are inviting South Asian communities, Indian Wikimedians, and anyone else interested to join a region-focused conversation on Movement Strategy and implementation. Please join us on Friday Oct. 30 at 19.30 / 7:30 pm IST (Google Meet).
The purpose of the meeting is to get prepared for global conversations, to identify priorities for implementation in 2021, and to plan the following steps. There are 10 recommendations and they propose multiple 45 initiatives written over two years by many Wikimedians. It is now up to communities to decide which ones we should work on together in 2021, starting with local and regional conversations. Global meetings will take place later in November when we will discuss global coordination and resources. More information about the global events will be shared soon.
- What is work you’re already doing that is aligned with Movement Strategy?
- What are priorities for you in 2021?
- What are things we should all work on globally?
We would not be able to grow and diversify as a movement if communities from South Asia are not meaningfully involved in implementing the recommendations. Join the conversation with your questions and ideas, or just come to say hi. See you on Friday October 30.

Global bot policy proposal: invitation to a Meta discussion
Hello!
I apologize for sending a message in English. Please help translate to your language. According to the list, your wiki project currently is opted in to the global bot policy. Under this policy, bots that fix double redirects or maintain interwiki links are allowed to operate under a global bot flag that is assigned directly by the stewards.
As the Wikimedia projects developed, the need for the current global bot policy decreased, and in the past years, no bots were appointed via that policy. That is mainly given Wikidata were estabilished in 2013, and it is no longer necessary to have dozens of bots that maintain interwiki links.
A proposal was made at Meta-Wiki, which proposes that the stewards will be authorized to determine whether an uncontroversial task may be assigned a global bot flag. The stewards already assign permissions that are more impactful on many wikis, namely, global sysops and global renamers, and I do not think that trust should be an issue. The stewards will assign the permission only to time-proven bots that are already approved at a number of projects, like ListeriaBot.
By this message, I would like to invite you to comment in the global RFC, to voice your opinion about this matter.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,

[Small wiki toolkits] Upcoming bots workshops: Understanding community needs
Greetings, as you may be aware that as part of Small wiki toolkits - South Asia, we conduct a workshop every month on technical topics to help small wikis. In February, we are planning on organizing a workshop on the topic of bots. Bots are automated tools that carry out repetitive, tedious and mundane tasks. To help us structure the workshop, we would like understand the needs of the community in this regard. Please let us know any of
- a) repetitive/mundane tasks that you generally do, especially for maintenance
- b) tasks you think can be automated on your wiki.
Please let us your inputs on workshops talk page, before 7 February 2021. You can also let me know your inputs by emailing me or pinging me here in this section. Please note that you do not need to have any programming knowledge for this workshop or to give input. Regards, KCVelaga 13:45, 28 ജനുവരി 2021 (UTC)
Call for feedback: WMF Community Board seats & Office hours tomorrow
(sorry for posting in English)
Dear Wikimedians,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. Below you will find the problem statement and various ideas from the Board to address it. We are offering multiple channels for questions and feedback. With the help of a team of community facilitators, we are organizing multiple conversations with multiple groups in multiple languages.
During this call for feedback we publish weekly reports and we draft the final report that will be delivered to the Board. With the help of this report, the Board will approve the next steps to organize the selection of six community seats in the upcoming months. Three of these seats are due for renewal and three are new, recently approved.
Participate in this call for feedback and help us form a more diverse and better performing Board of Trustees!
Problems: While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. This problem was identified in the Board’s 2019 governance review, along with recommendations for how to address it.
To solve the problem of capacity, we have agreed to increase the Board size to a maximum of 16 trustees (it was 10). Regarding performance and diversity, we have approved criteria to evaluate new Board candidates. What is missing is a process to promote community candidates that represent the diversity of our movement and have the skills and experience to perform well on the Board of a complex global organization.
Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. Meanwhile, our movement has grown larger and more complex, our technical and strategic needs have increased, and we have new and more difficult policy challenges around the globe. As well, our Movement Strategy recommendations urge us to increase our diversity and promote perspectives from other regions and other social backgrounds.
In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. What process can we all design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?
Ideas: The Board has discussed several ideas to overcome the problems mentioned above. Some of these ideas could be taken and combined, and some discarded. Other ideas coming from the call for feedback could be considered as well. The ideas are:
- Ranked voting system. Complete the move to a single transferable vote system, already used to appoint affiliate-selected seats, which is designed to best capture voters’ preferences.
- Quotas. Explore the possibility of introducing quotas to ensure certain types of diversity in the Board (details about these quotas to be discussed in this call for feedback).
- Call for types of skills and experiences. When the Board makes a new call for candidates, they would specify types of skills and experiences especially sought.
- Vetting of candidates. Potential candidates would be assessed using the Trustee Evaluation Form and would be confirmed or not as eligible candidates.
- Board-delegated selection committee. The community would nominate candidates that this committee would assess and rank using the Trustee Evaluation Form. This committee would have community elected members and Board appointed members.
- Community-elected selection committee. The community would directly elect the committee members. The committee would assess and rank candidates using the Trustee Evaluation Form.
- Election of confirmed candidates. The community would vote for community nominated candidates that have been assessed and ranked using the Trustee Evaluation Form. The Board would appoint the most voted candidates.
- Direct appointment of confirmed candidates. After the selection committee produces a ranked list of community nominated candidates, the Board would appoint the top-ranked candidates directly.
Call for feedback: The call for feedback runs from February 1 until the end of March 14. We are looking for a broad representation of opinions. We are interested in the reasoning and the feelings behind your opinions. In a conversation like this one, details are important. We want to support good conversations where everyone can share and learn from others. We want to hear from those who understand Wikimedia governance well and are already active in movement conversations. We also want to hear from people who do not usually contribute to discussions. Especially those who are active in their own roles, topics, languages or regions, but usually not in, say, a call for feedback on Meta.
You can participate by joining the Telegram chat group, and giving feedback on any of the talk pages on Meta-Wiki. We are welcoming the organisation of conversations in any language and in any channel. If you want us to organize a conversation or a meeting for your wiki project or your affiliate, please write to me. I will also reach out to communities and affiliates to soon have focused group discussions.
An office hour is also happening tomorrow at 12 pm (UTC) to discuss this topic. Access link will be available 15 minutes before the scheduled time (please watch the office hour page for the link, and I will also share on mailing lists). In case you are not able to make it, please don't worry, there will be more discussions and meetings in the next few weeks.

Research Needs Assessment for Indian Language Wikimedia (ILW) Projects
Dear All,
The Access to Knowledge (A2K) team at CIS has been engaged with work on research on Indian language Wikimedia projects as part of the APG since 2019. This year, following up on our learnings from work so far, we are undertaking a needs assessment exercise to understand a) the awareness about research within Indian language Wikimedia communities, and identify existing projects if any, and b) to gather community inputs on knowledge gaps and priority areas of focus, and the role of research in addressing the same.
We would therefore request interested community members to respond to the needs assessment questionnaire here:
Please respond in any Indian language as suitable. The deadline for this exercise is February 20, 2021. For any queries do write to us on the CIS-A2K research talk page here MediaWiki message delivery (സംവാദം) 17:08, 3 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2021 (UTC)

WMF Community Board seats: Upcoming panel discussions
As a result of the first three weeks of the call for feedback on WMF Community Board seats, three topics turned out to be the focus of the discussion. Additionally, a new idea has been introduced by a community member recently: Candidates resources. We would like to pursue these focus topics and the new idea appropriately, discussing them in depth and collecting new ideas and fresh approaches by running four panels in the next week. Every panel includes four members from the movement covering many regions, backgrounds and experiences, along with a trustee of the Board. Every panel will last 45 minutes, followed by a 45-minute open mic discussion, where everyone’s free to ask questions or to contribute to the further development of the panel's topics.

- Support for candidates - Saturday, March 13, 13:30 UTC
- Board - Global Council - Hubs - Saturday, March 13, 16:00 UTC

Global bot policy changes
Hello!
I apologize for sending a message in English. Please help translate to your language. According to the list, your wiki project is currently opted in to the global bot policy. As such, I want to let you know about some changes that were made after the global RfC was closed.
- Global bots are now subject to a 2 week discussion, and it'll be publicized via a MassMessage list, available at Bot policy/New global bot discussion on Meta. Please subscribe yourself or your wiki if you are interested in new global bots proposals.
- For a bot to be considered for approval, it must demonstrate it is welcomed in multiple projects, and a good way to do that is to have the bot flag on at least 5 wikis for a single task.
- The bot operator should make sure to adhere to the wiki's preference as related to the use of the bot flag (i.e., if a wiki doesn't want a bot to use the flag as it edits, that should be followed).
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,

Invitation for Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021
Hello there,
We are inviting you to participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021, a global contest scheduled to run from July through August 2021.
Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.
In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries joined the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training organized by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.
The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.
Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for recruiting and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content to existing pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign can be used by user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops and edit-a-thons.
The organizing team is looking for a contact person to coordinate WPWP participation at the Wikimedia user group or chapter level (geographically or thematically) or for a language WP. We’d be glad for you to reply to this message, or sign up directly at WPWP Participating Communities.
Please feel free to contact Organizing Team if you have any query.
Kind regards,
Tulsi Bhagat
Communication Manager

Call for Election Volunteers: 2021 WMF Board elections
Hello all,
Based on an extensive call for feedback earlier this year, the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced the plan for the 2021 Board elections. Apart from improving the technicalities of the process, the Board is also keen on improving active participation from communities in the election process. During the last elections, Voter turnout in prior elections was about 10% globally. It was better in communities with volunteer election support. Some of those communities reached over 20% voter turnout. We know we can get more voters to help assess and promote the best candidates, but to do that, we need your help.
We are looking for volunteers to serve as Election Volunteers. Election Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities. The facilitation team sees Election Volunteers as doing the following:
- Promote the election and related calls to action in community channels.
- With the support from facilitators, organize discussions about the election in their communities.
- Translate “a few” messages for their communities
Check out more details about Election Volunteers and add your name next to the community you will support in this table. We aim to have at least one Election Volunteer, even better if there are two or more sharing the work. If you have any queries, please ping me under this message or email me. Regards, KCVelaga (WMF) 05:21, 12 മേയ് 2021 (UTC)
Candidates from South Asia for 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections
Dear Wikimedians,
As you may be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation has started elections for community seats on the Board of Trustees. While previously there were three community seats on the Board, with the expansion of the Board to sixteen seats last year, community seats have been increased to eight, four of which are up for election this year.
In the last fifteen years of the Board's history, there were only a few candidates from the South Asian region who participated in the elections, and hardly anyone from the community had a chance to serve on the Board. While there are several reasons for this, this time, the Board and WMF are very keen on encouraging and providing support to potential candidates from historically underrepresented regions. This is a good chance to change the historical problem of representation from the South Asian region in high-level governance structures.
Ten days after the call for candidates began, there aren't any candidates from South Asia yet, there are still 10 days left! I would like to ask community members to encourage other community members, whom you think would be potential candidates for the Board. While the final decision is completely up to the person, it can be helpful to make sure that they are aware of the election and the call for candidates.
Let me know if you need any information or support.
Thank you, KCVelaga (WMF) 10:03, 19 ജൂൺ 2021 (UTC)

Universal Code of Conduct EDGR conversation hour for South Asia
Dear Wikimedians,
As you may already know, the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a baseline of behaviour for collaboration on Wikimedia projects worldwide. Communities may add to this to develop policies that take account of local and cultural context while maintaining the criteria listed here as a minimum standard. The Wikimedia Foundation Board has ratified the policy in December 2020.
The current round of conversations is around how the Universal Code of Conduct should be enforced across different Wikimedia platforms and spaces. This will include training of community members to address harassment, development of technical tools to report harassment, and different levels of handling UCoC violations, among other key areas.
The conversation hour is an opportunity for community members from South Asia to discuss and provide their feedback, which will be passed on to the drafting committee. The details of the conversation hour are as follows:
- Date: 16 September
- Time: Bangladesh: 5:30 pm to 7 pm, India & Sri Lanka: 5 pm to 6:30 pm, Nepal: 5:15 pm to 5:45 pm
- Meeting link: https://meet.google.com/dnd-qyuq-vnd | add to your calendar

Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022 Postponed
Dear Wikimedians,
We want to give you an update related to Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022. Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022 (or WMWM2022) was to be conducted from 18 to 20 February 2022 and is postponed now.
Currently, we are seeing a new wave of the pandemic that is affecting many people around. Although WMWM is an online event, it has multiple preparation components such as submission, registration, RFC etc which require community involvement.
We feel this may not be the best time for extensive community engagement. We have also received similar requests from Wikimedians around us. Following this observation, please note that we are postponing the event, and the new dates will be informed on the mailing list and on the event page. Although the main WMWM is postponed, we may conduct a couple of brief calls/meets (similar to the Stay safe, stay connected call) on the mentioned date, if things go well.
We'll also get back to you about updates related to WMWM once the situation is better. Thank you MediaWiki message delivery (സംവാദം) 07:27, 27 ജനുവരി 2022 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedians, we are happy to announce that the Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group will be organizing Indic Hackathon 2022, a regional event as part of the main Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 taking place in a hybrid mode during 20-22 May 2022. The event will take place in Hyderabad. The regional event will be in-person with support for virtual participation. Extension of Pune Nadi Darshan 2022: A campaign cum photography contest
Dear Wikimedians,
As you already know, Pune Nadi Darshan is a campaign cum photography contest on Wikimedia Commons organised jointly by Rotary Water Olympiad and CIS-A2K. The contest started on 16 March on the occasion of World Water Week and received a good response from citizens as well as organisations working on river issues.
Taking into consideration the feedback from the volunteers and organisations about extending the deadline of 16 April, the organisers have decided to extend the contest till 16 May 2022. Some leading organisations have also shown interest in donating their archive and need a sufficient time period for the process.
We are still mainly using these topics which are mentioned below.
- Beauty of rivers in Pune district
- Flora & fauna of rivers in Pune district
- Religious & cultural places around rivers in Pune district
- Human activities at rivers in Pune district
- Constructions on rivers in Pune district
- River Pollution in Pune district
Anyone can participate still now, so, we appeal to all Wikimedians to contribute to this campaign to enrich river-related content on Wikimedia Commons. For more information, you can visit the event page.

Join the South Asia / ESEAP Annual Plan Meeting with Maryana Iskander
Dear community members,
In continuation of Maryana Iskander's listening tour, the Movement Communications and Movement Strategy and Governance teams invite you to discuss the 2022-23 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan.
The conversations are about these questions:
- The 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy sets a direction toward "knowledge as a service" and "knowledge equity". The Wikimedia Foundation wants to plan according to these two goals. How do you think the Wikimedia Foundation should apply them to our work?
- The Wikimedia Foundation continues to explore better ways of working at a regional level. We have increased our regional focus in areas like grants, new features, and community conversations. How can we improve?
- Anyone can contribute to the Movement Strategy process. We want to know about your activities, ideas, requests, and lessons learned. How can the Wikimedia Foundation better support the volunteers and affiliates working in Movement Strategy activities?
Date and Time
The meeting will happen via Zoom on 24 April (Sunday) at 07:00 UTC (local time). Kindly add the event to your calendar. Live interpretation will be available for some languages.

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election 2022 - Call for Election Volunteers
The Movement Strategy and Governance team is looking for community members to serve as election volunteers in the upcoming Board of Trustees election.
The idea of the Election Volunteer Program came up during the 2021 Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election. This program turned out to be successful. With the help of Election Volunteers we were able to increase outreach and participation in the election by 1,753 voters over 2017. Overall turnout was 10.13%, 1.1 percentage points more, and 214 wikis were represented in the election.
There were a total of 74 wikis that did not participate in 2017 that produced voters in the 2021 election. Can you help increase the participation even more?
Election volunteers will help in the following areas:
- Translate short messages and announce the ongoing election process in community channels
- Optional: Monitor community channels for community comments and questions
Volunteers should:
- Maintain the friendly space policy during conversations and events
- Present the guidelines and voting information to the community in a neutral manner
Do you want to be an election volunteer and ensure your community is represented in the vote? Sign up here to receive updates. You can use the talk page for questions about translation.

Propose statements for the 2022 Election Compass
Hi all,
Community members are invited to propose statements to use in the Election Compass for the 2022 Board of Trustees election.
An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/neutral/disagree). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.
Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:
- July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
- July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
- July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements
- August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
- August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
- August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision
The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August. The Elections Committee will oversee the process, supported by the Movement Strategy and Governance (MSG) team. MSG will check that the questions are clear, there are no duplicates, no typos, and so on.
Regards,
Movement Strategy & Governance

Delay of Board of Trustees Election
Dear community members,
I am reaching out to you today with an update about the timing of the voting for the Board of Trustees election.
As many of you are already aware, this year we are offering an Election Compass to help voters identify the alignment of candidates on some key topics. Several candidates requested an extension of the character limitation on their responses expanding on their positions, and the Elections Committee felt their reasoning was consistent with the goals of a fair and equitable election process.
To ensure that the longer statements can be translated in time for the election, the Elections Committee and Board Selection Task Force decided to delay the opening of the Board of Trustees election by one week - a time proposed as ideal by staff working to support the election.
Although it is not expected that everyone will want to use the Election Compass to inform their voting decision, the Elections Committee felt it was more appropriate to open the voting period with essential translations for community members across languages to use if they wish to make this important decision.
The voting will open on August 23 at 00:00 UTC and close on September 6 at 23:59 UTC.
Best regards,
Matanya, on behalf of the Elections Committee

WikiConference India 2023: Initial conversations
Dear Wikimedians,
Hope all of you are doing well. We are glad to inform you to restart the conversation to host the next WikiConference India 2023 after WCI 2020 which was not conducted due to the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, it couldn't take place. However, we are hoping to reinitiate this discussion and for that we need your involvement, suggestions and support to help organize a much needed conference in February-March of 2023.
The proposed 2023 conference will bring our energies, ideas, learnings, and hopes together. This conference will provide a national-level platform for Indian Wikimedians to connect, re-connect, and establish their collaboration itself can be a very important purpose on its own- in the end it will empower us all to strategize, plan ahead and collaborate- as a movement.
We hope we, the Indian Wikimedia Community members, come together in various capacities and make this a reality. We believe we will take learnings from earlier attempts, improve processes & use best practices in conducting this conference purposefully and fruitfully.
Here is a survey form to get your responses on the same notion. Unfortunately we are working with short timelines since the final date of proposal submission is 5 September. We request you please fill out the form by 28th August. After your responses, we can decide if we have the community need and support for the conference. You are also encouraged to add your support on this page, if you support the idea.
