ഒരു ഇന്ത്യക്കാരനായ ഒരു വെക്റ്റർ നിയന്ത്രണ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും ജീവശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും അക്കരോളജിസ്റ്റും ആണ് പി. കെ. രാജഗോപാലൻ. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വെക്റ്റർ ജലജന്യ രോഗങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ നിയന്ത്രണപരിപാടികൾക്ക് തുടക്കമിട്ട ആൾ എന്നനിലയിൽ ആണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. [1] പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലെ ഇന്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച് മാനേജുചെയ്ത വെക്റ്റർ കൺട്രോൾ റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിന്റെ മുൻ ഡയറക്ടറാണ്. [2] [3] 1949 ൽ ബനാറസ് ഹിന്ദു സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയ അദ്ദേഹം 1951 ൽ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഫസ്റ്റ് റാങ്കിൽ സുവോളജിയിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദം നേടി. 1952 ൽ പൂനെയിലെ വൈറസ് റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിൽ ചേർന്നു. ഡോ. ടി രാമചന്ദ്ര റാവുവിനെപ്പോലുള്ള മികച്ച വെക്റ്റർ കൺട്രോൾ സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റുകളുടെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ഒരു യുവ ഗവേഷണ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനെന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ പ്രവർത്തനത്തെ മാനിച്ച്, 1957 ൽ കാലിഫോർണിയ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് പൊതുജനാരോഗ്യത്തിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദം നേടുന്നതിനായി റോക്ക്ഫെല്ലർ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് നൽകി. [4] കോളേജ് പാർക്കിലെ മേരിലാൻഡ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് അക്കറോളജിയിൽ ഡിപ്ലോമ നേടി.

1960 ൽ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം വീണ്ടും വൈറസ് റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിൽ ചേർന്നു, അവിടെ അദ്ദെഹത്തോട് ഗ്രാമീണ കർണാടകയിലെ നിഗൂഢമായ ക്യാസനൂർ വനരോഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അന്വേഷണത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നൽകാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. രോഗത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവം അജ്ഞാതമായിരുന്നു. പ്രശസ്ത പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ അന്തരിച്ച ഡോ. സലിം അലിയുടെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ കെ.എഫ്.ഡിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി രോഗ വെക്ടറുകൾ വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിൽ ദേശാടന പക്ഷികളുടെ പങ്ക് സംബന്ധിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പയനിയറിംഗ് പ്രവർത്തനം പൂനെ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് ബിരുദത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചു.

ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിലെ കൊതുകുകളുടെ ജനിതക നിയന്ത്രണം സംബന്ധിച്ച ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ പ്രോജക്ടിന്റെ സീനിയർ സയന്റിസ്റ്റായി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ നിയമിച്ചു. അക്കാലത്ത് കൊതുകിന്റെ എണ്ണത്തിന്റെ പെരുമാറ്റത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അറിവ് വികസിപ്പിച്ചു. 1975 ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലേക്ക് നിയമിച്ചു. അവിടെ വെക്റ്റർ കണ്ട്രോൾ റിസർച്ച് സെന്റർ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു - വെക്റ്റർ പരത്തുന്ന രോഗങ്ങളുടെ പാരിസ്ഥിതിക നിയന്ത്രണം പഠിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഒരു ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹം തുടക്കമിട്ടു.

വി‌സി‌ആർ‌സി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ബർദ്വാൻ ജില്ലയിലെ ജാപ്പനീസ് എൻ‌സെഫലൈറ്റിസ് നിയന്ത്രണത്തിന് കാര്യമായ സംഭാവന നൽകി. എന്നിരുന്നാലും, ഡോ. രാജഗോപാലന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ അതിന്റെ പ്രധാന നേട്ടം ബയോളജിക്കൽ കൺട്രോളിന്റെ സാങ്കേതികതയ്ക്ക് തുടക്കമിട്ടതാണ്, ഇത് പാരിസ്ഥിതിക നടപടികളുമായി കുറഞ്ഞ രാസ ഇടപെടലും പ്രകൃതിദത്ത കൊതുക് ലാർവ വേട്ടക്കാരെയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഫിലറിയാസിസ് പോലുള്ള രോഗങ്ങൾ കുറയ്ക്കുന്നതിന് സഹായിച്ചു. പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലും കേരളത്തിലെ ചേർത്തലയിലും അഞ്ച് വർഷത്തിലേറെയായി ഇത് പ്രകടമായി.

അദ്ദേഹം ലോകമെമ്പാടും വ്യാപകമായി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു റോക്ക്ഫെല്ലർ ഫെലോ ആയിരുന്നു; ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ STAC (ശാസ്ത്ര-സാങ്കേതിക ഉപദേശക സമിതി) അംഗം; മലേറിയ, ഫിലേറിയാസിസ്, വെക്റ്റർ കൺട്രോൾ എന്നിവ സംബന്ധിച്ച ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ വിദഗ്ദ്ധ സമിതികൾ; ഫിലേറിയസിസ്, വെക്ടറുകളുടെ ബയോളജിക്കൽ കൺട്രോൾ എന്നിവ സംബന്ധിച്ച ടിഡിആറിന്റെ (ട്രോപ്പിക്കൽ ഡിസീസ് റിസർച്ച്) ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ സ്റ്റിയറിംഗ് കമ്മിറ്റി. ശ്രീലങ്ക, ഇന്തോനേഷ്യ, വിയറ്റ്നാം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ മലേറിയ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിനായി ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ ഉപദേഷ്ടാവായിരുന്നു.

സേവനത്തിലായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ ഇരുന്നൂറിലധികം ശാസ്ത്രീയ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ആദ്യമായി വി‌സി‌ആർ‌സിയിലെ മെഡിക്കൽ എൻ‌ടോമോളജി കോഴ്‌സ് എം.എസ്സി. അദ്ദേഹം തുടങ്ങിയതാണ്, ഇതിൽ നൂറിലധികം ബിരുദധാരികളായി. വി‌സി‌ആർ‌സിയിൽ ആയിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ പിഎച്ച്ഡിക്ക് 18 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം മാർഗനിർദേശം നൽകിയിരുന്നു.

തന്റെ റിട്ടയർമെന്റിനുശേഷം 1990 ൽ അദ്ദേഹം ലോകാരോഗ്യസംഘടനയിൽ അവരുടെ സ്റ്റിയറിംഗ് കമ്മിറ്റികളിൽ അംഗമായി മന്തിലും രോഗവാഹികളായ കീടങ്ങളുടെ ജീവശാസ്ത്രപരവും നിയന്ത്രണത്തിന്റെ സ്റ്റീയറിങ്ങ് കമ്മറ്റി അംഗമായിരുന്നു. [1] ട്രോപ്പിക്കൽ മെഡിസിൻ റോയൽ സൊസൈറ്റി, യുകെ യുടെ ഒരു ഫെലോ ആയിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.[2] കൂടാതെ നിരവധി ലേഖനങ്ങൾ വെക്റ്റർ നിയന്ത്രണത്തെപ്പറ്റിയും അക്കാരോളജിയെപ്പറ്റിയും അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതി.[6] [7] സ്കൂളുകൾ, സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ, ഗവേഷണ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ വെക്റ്റർ നിയന്ത്രണ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതുകയും സംസാരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

പ്രവർത്തന മേഖല[തിരുത്തുക]

വെക്റ്റർ പരത്തുന്ന രോഗങ്ങളുടെ പാരിസ്ഥിതിക വശങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഡോ. രാജഗോപാലൻ നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ടായി ഇന്ത്യയിലെ അത്തരം വിവിധ രോഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും വിശദമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശാലമായ ജോലിയുടെ സംഗ്രഹം:

  • ജാപ്പനീസ് എൻ‌സെഫലൈറ്റിസും അതിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണവും പല സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും;
  • ടിക്കുകളിലും മൈറ്റുകളിലും, ചെറിയ സസ്തനികൾ, പക്ഷികൾ, ക്യാസനൂർ വനരോഗത്തിന്റെ പകർച്ചവ്യാധി എന്നിവയിൽ;
  • കൊതുകുകളുടെ ജനിതക നിയന്ത്രണം;
  • പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലെ ബാൻക്രോഫ്ഷ്യൻ ഫിലേറിയാസിസ് നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നതിന് കമ്മ്യൂണിറ്റി പങ്കാളിത്തത്തോടെ സംയോജിത വെക്റ്റർ നിയന്ത്രണ രീതികൾ
  • ചേർത്തലയിലെ ബ്രൂജിയൻ ഫിലേറിയാസിസ് ഇല്ലാതാക്കൽ;
  • രാമേശ്വരം, നദീതീരത്ത് ദ്വീപ് മലേറിയ, സേലത്തെ നഗര മലേറിയ എന്നിവയുടെ നിയന്ത്രണം
  • പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലെ തീരദേശ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ മലേറിയ നിയന്ത്രണം; ഒറീസയിലെ ആദിവാസി പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ മലേറിയ നിയന്ത്രണം. )

പഠനങ്ങളും പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളും[തിരുത്തുക]

ഡോ. രാജഗോപാലൻ വെക്റ്റർ ബയോളജിയിലെ അറിവ് നേടുന്നതിൽ തുടർന്നു. ടോക്കിയോയിലെ നാഷണൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ഹെൽത്ത്, പോർട്ട് ഓഫ് സ്പെയിനിലെ ട്രിനിഡാഡ് റീജിയണൽ വൈറസ് ലബോറട്ടറി, ഉഗാണ്ടയിലെ എന്റേബെയിലെ ഈസ്റ്റ് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വൈറസ് ലബോറട്ടറി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ബാങ്കോക്കിലെ 406-ാമത് സീറ്റോ ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് അർബോവൈറസുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് വിപുലമായ പരിശീലനം നേടി. മലേറിയ റിസർച്ച് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട്, ടാൻസാനിയയിലെ അമാനി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ മലേറിയ വെക്റ്റർ നിയന്ത്രണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ലണ്ടനിലെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽ (നാച്ചുറൽ ഹിസ്റ്ററി) പി.എഫ്. ഓക്സ്ഫോർഡിലെ ബ്യൂറോ ഓഫ് അനിമൽ പോപ്പുലേഷനിൽ ചാൾസ് എൽട്ടന്റെ കീഴിൽ ഇക്കോളജി പഠിക്കാനുള്ള പദവി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു; കെയ്‌റോയിലെ യുഎസ് നേവൽ മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച് യൂണിറ്റായ ഡോ. ഹൂഗ്‌സ്ട്രാളിന്റെ കീഴിൽ അക്കറോളജി. മഹത്തായ പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഡോ. സലിം അലി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിഎച്ച്ഡി ഗൈഡ് ആയിരുന്നു. അജ്ഞാതമായ എറ്റിയോളജി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് രോഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷിക്കുന്ന മേഖലയിലും, ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ ഈ മേഖലയിലെ വെക്റ്റർ പരത്തുന്ന പല രോഗങ്ങളുടെയും പകർച്ചവ്യാധിയെക്കുറിച്ചും വ്യാപകമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം സമ്പൂർണ്ണ ജീവശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ്. ഡോ. ജോർജ്ജ് ബോഷെലുമായും റോക്ക്ഫെല്ലർ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന്റെ മറ്റു പലരുമായും അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ടു പതിറ്റാണ്ടായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.

പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലെ മന്തുനിയന്ത്രണ പ്രോഗ്രാമിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള തന്റെ കൃതിയിൽ, ഡോ. രാജഗോപാലൻ വ്യക്തിപരമായി പഠിക്കുകയും അന്നത്തെ പുതിയ ജനസംഖ്യാ സ്ഥിതിവിവരക്കണക്ക് ഈ മേഖലയിലെ ഒരു നിയന്ത്രണ പാരാമീറ്റർ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

അവാർഡുകളും ബഹുമതികളും[തിരുത്തുക]

വെക്റ്റർ ബയോളജി, കൺട്രോൾ മേഖലയിലെ സമഗ്ര സംഭാവനയ്ക്ക് 1980 ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഐസി‌എം‌ആറിന്റെ പി‌എൻ‌രാജു ഓറേഷൻ അവാർഡ് ലഭിച്ചു; 1985 ൽ ആരോഗ്യ ശാസ്ത്ര മേഖലയിൽ ശാസ്ത്ര സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയ്ക്കുള്ള ഓം പ്രകാശ് ഭാസിൻ അവാർഡ് ലഭിച്ചു; ചാൾസ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി, പ്രാഗ്, 1988 ൽ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന് നൽകിയ സമഗ്ര സംഭാവനയ്ക്ക് സ്വർണ്ണ മെഡൽ; ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ റോയൽ സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ബയോളജി 1989 ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഫെലോ ആയി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. റോയൽ സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ട്രോപ്പിക്കൽ മെഡിസിൻ 1990 ൽ ഫെലോ (ട്രോപ്പിക്കൽ മെഡിസിൻ) ആയി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ അംഗീകരിച്ച് 1990 ൽ പ്രസിഡന്റ് ആർ വെങ്കടരാമൻ പത്മശ്രീ ബഹുമതി നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു.

വിരമിച്ചതിനുശേഷം[തിരുത്തുക]

വിരമിച്ച ശേഷമുള്ള വർഷങ്ങളിൽ, ഉപദേശക സമിതികളിലെ പല സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലും, എസ്ആർഎം യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് പബ്ലിക് ഹെൽത്തിൽ വിസിറ്റിംഗ് പ്രൊഫസറായും അദ്ധ്യാപനം തുടരുന്നു. വിരമിക്കലിനുശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പൊതുജനാരോഗ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് നിരവധി വിമർശനാത്മക ലേഖനങ്ങൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു, പോപ്പുലർ സയൻസ്, സോഷ്യൽ, എസോട്ടറിക് വിഷയങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ധാരാളം ലേഖനങ്ങൾ എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, അവ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുകയും സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ലൈഫ് ടൈം അച്ചീവ്മെൻറ് അവാർഡുകൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സമ്മാനിച്ചവർ:

(1) അസോസിയേഷൻ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ മൈക്രോബയോളജിസ്റ്റ്സ് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ;

(2) നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് ഓഫ് പാരാസിറ്റോളജി, കൂടാതെ,

(3) അന്ന യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ് ഓഫ് ബയോടെക്നോളജി, ചെന്നൈ.

(4) പൊതുജനാരോഗ്യത്തിന് ആജീവനാന്ത സംഭാവന നൽകിയതിന് 2014-ൽ ആദ്യത്തെ ആഗോള പൊതുജനാരോഗ്യ സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ ചെന്നൈയിലെ എസ്‌ആർ‌എം സർവകലാശാലയിലെ സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് പബ്ലിക് ഹെൽത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ബഹുമാനിച്ചു.

(5) 2016 ജനുവരിയിൽ നാഷണൽ വെക്റ്റർ ബോൾ ഡിസീസ് കൺട്രോൾ പ്രോഗ്രാമും ഇന്ത്യൻ അസോസിയേഷൻ ഓഫ് എപ്പിഡെമിയോളജിസ്റ്റുകളും ബാംഗ്ലൂരിൽ നടന്ന യോഗത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് മറ്റൊരു ലൈഫ് ടൈം അച്ചീവ്മെൻറ് അവാർഡ് നൽകി.

(6). 2017 ഫെബ്രുവരി 27 ന് നാഷണൽ അക്കാദമി ഓഫ് വെക്ടേഴ്‌സ് ആൻഡ് വെക്റ്റർ ബോൾ ഡിസീസസും തിരുവൂരൂരിലെ സെൻട്രൽ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ഓഫ് തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടും ഒരു തിളക്കമാർന്ന ചടങ്ങിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് മറ്റൊരു ലൈഫ് ടൈം അച്ചീവ്മെൻറ് അവാർഡ് നൽകി.

(7) ഫ്രണ്ട്‌ലൈൻ ന്യൂസ് മാഗസിൻ, 2017 ഏപ്രിൽ 28 ലക്കത്തിൽ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെയും നേട്ടങ്ങളെയും കുറിച്ച് ഒരു ലേഖനം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു, “കൊതുകുകൾക്കെതിരായ യുദ്ധം ”, ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലെ ചാൾസ് സ്ട്രറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ പ്രൊഫസർ ഡോ. എ. രാമൻ എഴുതിയത്.

(8) 2019 ഫെബ്രുവരി 13 ന് സൊസൈറ്റി ഫോർ വെക്റ്റർ ഇക്കോളജി (SOVE) - ഇന്ത്യൻ ചാപ്റ്റർ ഗോവയിലെ പഞ്ജിമിൽ നടന്ന ആദ്യ യോഗത്തിൽ ഡോ. ടി. മെഡിക്കൽ എൻ‌ടോമോളജി മേഖലയിലെ മികച്ച നേട്ടങ്ങൾ. അദ്ദേഹം മലേറിയയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒരു പ്രസംഗം നടത്തി, ഇത് 2019 ഏപ്രിലിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു.
