മോസ്കവ് (Russian: гра́д Моско́в), നദിക്കരികിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാലാണ് മോസ്കോ എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായത്. മോസ്കവ് എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ ഉദ്ഭവം അറിയില്ലെങ്കിലും, അതേപറ്റി പല അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളും ഉണ്ട്. 1147-ൽ യൂറി ഡോൾഗോർകി, നെ‌വ്‌ഗൊരോഡ് സെവെസ്‌കി രാജകുമാരനോട് മോസ്കോയിലേക്ക് വരാനായി ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നതാണ് മോസ്കോ എന്ന പേർ ആദ്യമായി പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു[3]

ഒൻപത് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം 1156-ൽ, വികസിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിനുചുറ്റും, തടി കൊണ്ട് ഒരു ചുറ്റുമതിൽ (ക്രെംലിൻ)കെട്ടാൻ യൂറി ഡോൾഗോർകി ഉത്തരവിട്ടു [12] 1237–1238 മംഗോളിയർ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ആക്രമിച്ച് നിവാസികളെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കി തീവച്ചു. പിന്നീട് പുനർനിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ട മോസ്കോ 1327-ൽ വ്ലാഡിമിർ സുസ്ദാലിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി.[13] വോൾഗ നദിയുടെ സാമീപ്യം മോസ്കോവിന്റെ പടിപടിയായുള്ള വികസനത്തിന് സഹായിച്ചു. ഗ്രാന്റ് ഡച്ചി ഒഫ് മോസ്കോ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഇവിടം റഷ്യയുടെ നാനാഭാഗങ്ങളിൽനിന്നുമുള്ള ആൾക്കാരെ ആകർഷിച്ചു.
