തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഏഷ്യയിൽ മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ കടൽതീരത്തു സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പശ്ചിമേഷ്യയിലെ രാജ്യമാണ് സിറിയ. പടിഞ്ഞാറ് മദ്ധ്യധരണ്യാഴി, വടക്ക് തുർക്കി, കിഴക്കും തെക്കുകിഴക്കും ഇറാഖ്, തെക്ക് ജോർദാൻ, തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഇസ്രായേൽ, ലെബനാൻ എന്നിവയാണ് അതിരുകൾ. തലസ്ഥാനവും ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും ദമാസ്കസ് ആണ്. 185,180 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (71,500 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ) വിസ്തൃതിയിൽ 25 ദശലക്ഷം ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ഇത് ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള 57-ാമത്തെ രാജ്യവും 87-ാമത്തെ വലിയ രാജ്യവുമാണ്.

പ്രാചീന ചരിത്രം

ലെബനൻ, ഇന്നത്തെ ഇസ്രയേലിന്റെയും ജോർദ്ദാന്റെയും ഭൂരിപക്ഷം പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ, ഇറാഖിന്റെയും സൗദി അറേബ്യയുടെയും ഏതാനു ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഇവചേർന്നതായിരുന്നു പുരാതന സിറിയ. ക്രി.മു 2100-ൽ അമോറൈറ്റ് ഗോത്രക്കാർ ഇവിടെ വാസമുറപ്പിച്ചു. അതിനുശേഷം അസീറിയക്കാരും ബാബിലോണിയക്കാരും പേർഷ്യക്കാരും ഗ്രീക്കുകാരും റോമാക്കാരും സിറിയയിൽ ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ക്രി.പി ഏഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലാണ് ഇവിടെ ഇസ്ലാം മതം പ്രചാരിച്ചത്. 1516 മുതൽ 1918 ഓട്ടോമൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു. 1920-ൽ ലെബനൻ സിറിയയിൽ നിന്നും വേർപെട്ടു. 1948-ൽ പൂർണ്ണ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നേടി. 1958-ൽ ഈജിപ്റ്റുമായിച്ചേർന്ന് ഐക്യ അറബ് റിപബ്ലിക്കിനു രൂപം നൽകി. എന്നാൽ ഈ കൂട്ടുകെട്ട് 1961-ൽ അവസാനിച്ചു.

ആധുനികകാലത്തിൽ ഇസ്രയേലുമായുള്ള അഭിപ്രായ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങൾമൂലം രാജ്യാന്തര ശ്രദ്ധയാകർഷിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യമാണു സിറിയ. സിറിയയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന ഗോലാൻ കുന്നുകൾ ഇസ്രയേൽക്കാർ കീഴടക്കിയതാണ് തർക്കത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാനകാരണം.
