ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ എഞ്ചിനീയറും ഭിഷഗ്വരയും നാസയിലെ മുൻ ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രികയുമാണ് മീ കരോൾ ജെമിസൺ (ജനനം: ഒക്ടോബർ 17, 1956) ബഹിരാകാശ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത ആദ്യത്തെ കറുത്ത വനിതയായ ജെമിസൺ സ്പേസ് ഷട്ടിൽ എൻ‌ഡോവറിൽ ഒരു മിഷൻ സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. 1987-ൽ നാസയുടെ ബഹിരാകാശ സേനയിൽ ചേർന്ന ജെമിസൺ, എസ്ടിഎസ് -47 ദൗത്യത്തിനായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഈ സമയത്ത് 1992 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 12-20 തീയതികളിൽ എട്ട് ദിവസത്തോളം ഭൂമിയെ പരിക്രമണം ചെയ്തു.

അലബാമയിൽ ജനിച്ച് ചിക്കാഗോയിൽ വളർന്ന ജെമിസൺ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് കെമിക്കൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിലും ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-അമേരിക്കൻ പഠനങ്ങളിലും ബിരുദം നേടി. തുടർന്ന് കോർനെൽ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് മെഡിക്കൽ ബിരുദം നേടി. 1983 മുതൽ 1985 വരെ ലൈബീരിയയിലെയും സിയറ ലിയോണിലെയും പീസ് കോർപ്സിന്റെ ഡോക്ടറായിരുന്ന ജെമിസൺ, ഒരു പൊതു പരിശീലകയായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ഒരു ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രികയാകാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിൽ അവർ നാസയ്ക്ക് അപേക്ഷ നൽകി.

ജെമിസൺ 1993-ൽ നാസ വിട്ട് ഒരു സാങ്കേതിക ഗവേഷണ കമ്പനി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് അവർ ലാഭേച്ഛയില്ലാതെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന് രൂപം നൽകി. ഫൗണ്ടേഷനിലൂടെ DARPA ധനസഹായം നൽകുന്ന 100 വർഷത്തെ സ്റ്റാർഷിപ്പ് പദ്ധതിയുടെ പ്രിൻസിപ്പലാണ്. കുട്ടികൾക്കായി നിരവധി പുസ്തകങ്ങളും ജെമിസൺ എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. സ്റ്റാർ ട്രെക്ക്: ദി നെക്സ്റ്റ് ജനറേഷൻ എപ്പിസോഡ് ഉൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി തവണ ടെലിവിഷനിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. നിരവധി ഓണററി ഡോക്ടറേറ്റുകൾ നേടിയ അവർ നാഷണൽ വിമൻസ് ഹാൾ ഓഫ് ഫെയിമിലേക്കും ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ സ്പേസ് ഹാൾ ഓഫ് ഫെയിമിലേക്കും ഇടം നേടി.

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം[തിരുത്തുക]

ചാർലി ജെമിസൺ, ഡൊറോത്തി ജെമിസൺ (née ഗ്രീൻ)[1] എന്നിവരുടെ മൂന്ന് മക്കളിൽ ഇളയവളായി മീ കരോൾ ജെമിസൺ 1956 ഒക്ടോബർ 17 ന് അലബാമയിലെ ഡെക്കാറ്റൂരിലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്.[2][3] അവരുടെ പിതാവ് ഒരു ചാരിറ്റി ഓർഗനൈസേഷന്റെ മെയിന്റനൻസ് സൂപ്പർവൈസറായിരുന്നു. അമ്മ ഇല്ലിനോയിയിലെ ചിക്കാഗോയിലെ ലുഡ്വിഗ് വാൻ ബീറ്റോവൻ എലിമെന്ററി സ്കൂളിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, കണക്ക് എന്നിവയുടെ പ്രാഥമിക സ്കൂൾ അദ്ധ്യാപികയായി ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.[4][5] ഈ കുടുംബം ആദ്യം വുഡ്‌ലാൻ, പിന്നീട് മോർഗൻ പാർക്ക് പരിസരങ്ങളിൽ താമസിച്ചു.[6] ശാസ്ത്രം പഠിക്കണമെന്നും ഒരുനാൾ ബഹിരാകാശത്തേക്ക് പോകണമെന്നും ജെമിസന് ചെറുപ്പം മുതലേ താല്പര്യമായിരുന്നു.[7] പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് സ്റ്റാർ ട്രെക്ക് ടെലിവിഷൻ ഷോയിലൂടെ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-അമേരിക്കൻ നടി നിക്കെൽ നിക്കോൾസ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ലെഫ്റ്റനന്റ് ഉഹുറയുടെ ചിത്രീകരണം എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ബഹിരാകാശത്തോടുള്ള താൽപര്യം കൂടുതൽ വർദ്ധിച്ചു.[8][9][10]

ജെമിസൺ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തികൊണ്ട് ശാസ്ത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതലറിയുന്നതിലൂടെ പ്രകൃതിയും മനുഷ്യ ശരീരശാസ്ത്രവും ആസ്വദിച്ചു പഠിച്ചു. അമ്മ അവരുടെ ജിജ്ഞാസയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചു. [8]അവരുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ ശാസ്ത്രത്തോടുള്ള ജെമിസന്റെ താൽപ്പര്യത്തെ പിന്തുണച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരിക്കലും അധ്യാപകരിൽ അതേ പിന്തുണ അവർ കണ്ടില്ല.[11]വളർന്നപ്പോൾ ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയാകാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് കിന്റർഗാർട്ടൻ അധ്യാപികയോട് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ, ടീച്ചർ അനുമാനിച്ചത് ജെമിസൺ ഒരു നഴ്‌സാകാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ്.[12]അപ്പോളോ ദൗത്യങ്ങളിൽ ബഹിരാകാശവനിതയാത്രികരുടെ അഭാവം ജെമിസനെ നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി. അവർ പിന്നീട് പറയുകയുണ്ടായി, "എല്ലാവരും ബഹിരാകാശത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ആവേശഭരിതരായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ ബഹിരാകാശവനിതയാത്രികർ ഇല്ലെന്നതിൽ ഞാൻ ശരിക്കും പ്രകോപിതയായി."[7]

എട്ടും ഒമ്പതും വയസ്സിൽ ബാലെ പഠിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ജെമിസൺ 12 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ ഹൈസ്കൂളിൽ ചേർന്നു. അവിടെ ചിയർ ലീഡിംഗ് ടീമിലും മോഡേൺ ഡാൻസ് ക്ലബ്ബിലും പങ്കെടുത്തു.[13][14]കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത്, ഒരു പ്രൊഫഷണൽ നർത്തകിയാകാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹം ജെമിസന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതിനാൽ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ, ജാപ്പനീസ്, ബാലെ, ജാസ്, മോഡേൺ ഡാൻസ് എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി നൃത്ത ശൈലികൾ പഠിച്ചു.[15]പതിനാലാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ വെസ്റ്റ് സൈഡ് സ്റ്റോറിയിലെ മരിയയുടെ പ്രധാന വേഷത്തിനായി ഓഡിഷൻ നടത്തി. പ്രധാന വേഷം ലഭിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും ഒടുവിൽ പശ്ചാത്തല നർത്തകിയായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.[16]

1973-ൽ ചിക്കാഗോയിലെ മോർഗൻ പാർക്ക് ഹൈസ്‌കൂളിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയ ശേഷം [12] ജെമിസൺ 16 ആം വയസ്സിൽ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ചേർന്നു.[8] അവൾ ചെറുപ്പമാണെങ്കിലും, കോളേജിൽ പോകുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് വിട്ടുനിൽക്കുന്നതിന് "തൻറേടമുണ്ടായിരുന്നിട്ടും നിഷ്കളങ്കമായിരുന്നതിനാൽ " അവരെ കൂടുതൽ അസ്വസ്ഥമാക്കിയെന്നു ജെമിസൺ പിന്നീട് പറയുകയുണ്ടായി.[8]ജെമിസന്റെ ക്ലാസുകളിൽ വളരെ കുറച്ച് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-അമേരിക്കൻ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ, മാത്രമല്ല അദ്ധ്യാപകരിൽ നിന്ന് വിവേചനം അനുഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.[17]2008-ൽ ദ ഡെസ് മൊയ്‌ൻസ് രജിസ്റ്ററിന് നൽകിയ അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ ജെമിസൺ 16 വയസിൽ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നത് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണെന്നും എന്നാൽ അവരിലെ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരുടെ ധാർഷ്‌ട്യം അവരെ സഹായിച്ചിരിക്കാമെന്നും പറയുകയുണ്ടായി[18].വെളുത്ത പുരുഷ മേധാവിത്വമുള്ള സമൂഹത്തിൽ സ്ത്രീകൾക്കും ന്യൂനപക്ഷങ്ങൾക്കും വിജയിക്കാൻ ചില ധാർഷ്ട്യം ആവശ്യമാണെന്ന് ജെമിസൺ വാദിച്ചു.[18]

സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡിൽ, ജെമിസൺ ബ്ലാക്ക് സ്റ്റുഡന്റ്സ് യൂണിയന്റെ നേതാവായിരുന്നു. [11] ഔട്ട് ഓഫ് ഷാഡോസ് എന്ന സംഗീത-നൃത്ത നിർമ്മാണവും അവർ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തു.[19]കോളേജിലെ സീനിയർ വർഷത്തിൽ, മെഡിക്കൽ സ്കൂളിൽ പോകുന്നതിനോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദധാരിയായോ ഒരു പ്രൊഫഷണൽ നർത്തകിയെന്ന നിലയിലോ ഉള്ള തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് അവർ ആശയകുഴപ്പത്തിലായി.[20] 1977-ൽ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡിൽ നിന്ന് ബി.എ. ആഫ്രിക്കൻ, ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-അമേരിക്കൻ പഠനങ്ങളിൽ ബിരുദം[21] , ബി.എസ്. കെമിക്കൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിലും ബിരുദം നേടി.[2][8]സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡിലായിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ബഹിരാകാശത്തോടുള്ള അവരുടെ ബാല്യകാല താൽപ്പര്യവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പഠനങ്ങൾ നടത്തുകയും ആദ്യം നാസയിൽ അപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ ആലോചിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[22]

മെഡിക്കൽ ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

ജെമിസൺ കോർണൽ മെഡിക്കൽ സ്കൂളിൽ ചേരുകയും പരിശീലനത്തിനിടെ ക്യൂബയിലേക്ക് പോകുകയും, അമേരിക്കൻ മെഡിക്കൽ സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് അസോസിയേഷന്റെയും തായ്‌ലൻഡിലെയും ധനസഹായത്തോടെ പഠനം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവിടെ ഒരു കമ്പോഡിയൻ അഭയാർഥിക്യാമ്പിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തു.[23][21]കിഴക്കൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഫ്ലൈയിംഗ് ഡോക്ടേഴ്സിന്റെ സ്റ്റേഷനിലും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.[21] കോർണലിൽ അവർ ചിലവഴിച്ച വർഷങ്ങളിൽ, ആൽവിൻ എയ്‌ലി അമേരിക്കൻ ഡാൻസ് തിയേറ്ററിന്റെ ക്ലാസുകളിൽ ചേരുന്നതിലൂടെ ജെമിസൺ നൃത്തം തുടർന്നു.[13]1981-ൽ മെഡിസിനിൽ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് നേടിയ ശേഷം 1982-ൽ ലോസ് ഏഞ്ചൽസ് കൗണ്ടി-യു‌എസ്‌സി മെഡിക്കൽ സെന്ററിൽ പരിശീലനം നേടി, റോസ്-ലൂസ് മെഡിക്കൽ ഗ്രൂപ്പിൽ ജനറൽ പ്രാക്ടീഷണറാകുകയും ചെയ്തു.[2][21]

1983-ൽ പീസ് കോർപ്സിന്റെ സ്റ്റാഫിൽ ചേർന്ന ജെമിസൺ 1985 വരെ ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ ഓഫീസറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ലൈബീരിയയിലും സിയറ ലിയോണിലും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന പീസ് കോർപ്സ് സന്നദ്ധപ്രവർത്തകരുടെ ആരോഗ്യം അവരുടെ ചുമതലയിലായിരുന്നു[20][24]. പീസ് കോർപ്സിന്റെ ഫാർമസി, ലബോറട്ടറി, മെഡിക്കൽ സ്റ്റാഫ്, കൂടാതെ വൈദ്യസഹായം നൽകൽ, സ്വയം പരിചരണത്തിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ലഘു ഗ്രന്ഥം എഴുതുക, ആരോഗ്യ സുരക്ഷാ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള മാർഗ്ഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കുകയും നടപ്പാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് ജെമിസൺ മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചു. വിവിധ വാക്സിനുകൾക്കായുള്ള ഗവേഷണത്തെ സഹായിക്കുന്ന സെന്റർസ് ഫോർ ഡിസീസ് കൺട്രോളിലും അവർ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.[25]

നാസ കരിയർ[തിരുത്തുക]

പീസ് കോർപ്സിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച് അമേരിക്കയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയ ജെമിസൺ കാലിഫോർണിയയിലെ ലോസ് ഏഞ്ചൽസിൽ താമസമാക്കി. അവിടെ സ്വകാര്യ പരിശീലനത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ച് ബിരുദതല എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് കോഴ്സുകൾ നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1983-ൽ സാലി റൈഡ്, ഗിയോൺ ബ്ലൂഫോർഡ് എന്നിവരുടെ മാതൃകയിലൂടെ നേടിയ പ്രചോദനത്തിലൂടെ ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രികരുടെ പ്രോഗ്രാമിലേക്ക് അപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ ജെമിസനെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു.[4]1985 ഒക്ടോബറിലാണ് നാസയുടെ ബഹിരാകാശ പരിശീലന പരിപാടിയിൽ ജെമിസൺ ആദ്യമായി അപേക്ഷിച്ചത്. എന്നാൽ 1986-ൽ ബഹിരാകാശവാഹന ചലഞ്ചർ ദുരന്തത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് പുതിയ സ്ഥാനാർത്ഥികളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത് നാസ മാറ്റിവച്ചു. 1987-ൽ ജെമിസൺ വീണ്ടും അപേക്ഷിക്കുകയും ഏകദേശം 2,000 അപേക്ഷകരിൽ നിന്ന് നാസ NASA ആസ്ട്രോനോട്ട് ഗ്രൂപ്പ് 12 ലെ പതിനഞ്ച് ആളുകളിൽ ഒരാളായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ചലഞ്ചറിന്റെ നാശത്തെ തുടർന്ന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത ആദ്യ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് ആയിരുന്നു അത്.[11][26] 1987-ൽ അസോസിയേറ്റഡ് പ്രസ്സ് അവരെ "ആദ്യത്തെ കറുത്ത സ്ത്രീ ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രിക" എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചു.[27]1989-ൽ ഫിലീഷ്യ റഷാദും റോബ് വെല്ലറും അതിഥിയായെത്തിയ ടെലിവിഷൻ സ്പെഷ്യൽ ബെസ്റ്റ് ക്യാച്ചുകളിൽ ജെമിസനെ രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും യോഗ്യതയുള്ള വ്യക്തികളിൽ ഒരാളായി സിബിഎസ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.[28]

ഫ്ലോറിഡയിലെ കെന്നഡി ബഹിരാകാശ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ വിക്ഷേപണ സഹായ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും ഷട്ടിൽ ഏവിയോണിക്സ് ഇന്റഗ്രേഷൻ ലബോറട്ടറിയിലെ (SAIL) ഷട്ടിൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറിന്റെ സ്ഥിരീകരണവും ജെമിസൺ നാസയുമായി നടത്തിയ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.[26][29][30]1989 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 28 ന്, എസ്ടിഎസ് -47 ബഹിരാകാശസംഘത്തിൽ മിഷൻ സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റ് 4 ആയി ചേരുന്നതിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കൂടാതെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്നതിനായി നാസ പരീക്ഷിച്ച പുതിയ ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രികയായ സയൻസ് മിഷൻ സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.[31]

1992 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 12 മുതൽ 20 വരെ ജെമിസൺ തന്റെ ഏക ബഹിരാകാശ ദൗത്യം എസ്ടിഎസ് -47 ൽ [32]അമേരിക്കയും ജപ്പാനും തമ്മിലുള്ള ഒരു സഹകരണ ദൗത്യവും അമ്പതാമത്തെ ഷട്ടിൽ ദൗത്യവും ആയി പറന്നു.[33]190 മണിക്കൂർ 30 മിനിറ്റ് 23 സെക്കൻഡ് ബഹിരാകാശത്ത് ജെമിസൺ പ്രവേശിക്കുകയും 127 തവണ ഭൂമിയെ പരിക്രമണം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.[34][35]ജെമിസനെ ബ്ലൂ ഷിഫ്റ്റിലേക്ക് നിയോഗിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വിമാനത്തിലെ ജോലിക്കാരെ രണ്ട് ഷിഫ്റ്റുകളായി വിഭജിച്ചു. എട്ട് ദിവസത്തെ ദൗത്യത്തിലുടനീളം, സ്റ്റാർ ട്രെക്കിൽ നിന്ന് "ഹെയ്‌ലിംഗ് ഫ്രീക്വൻസീസ് ഓപ്പൺ" എന്ന സല്യൂട്ട് നൽകി അവർ തന്റെ ഷിഫ്റ്റിൽ ആശയവിനിമയം ആരംഭിച്ചു.[36]ഒരു പശ്ചിമ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ പ്രതിമയും [8] അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര പൈലറ്റ് ലൈസൻസുള്ള ആദ്യത്തെ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അമേരിക്കക്കാരനായ വൈമാനികൻ ബെസ്സി കോൾമാന്റെ ഫോട്ടോയും അവർ എടുത്തു.[37][8]

ജപ്പാൻ മൊഡ്യൂളിലെ സ്‌പേസ് ലാബിൽ ജെമിസൺ നാസയുടെ ഫ്ലൂയിഡ് തെറാപ്പി സിസ്റ്റം പരീക്ഷിച്ചു. കുത്തിവയ്പ്പിനുള്ള ജലം ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ഒരു കൂട്ടം നടപടിക്രമങ്ങളും ഉപകരണങ്ങളും സ്റ്റെറിമാറ്റിക്സ് കോർപ്പറേഷൻ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തു. ബഹിരാകാശത്ത് ഉപ്പുലായനി ഉൽ‌പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് ആദ്യഘട്ടത്തിൽ ആവശ്യമുള്ള ജലം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിന് ബാക്സ്റ്റർ ഹെൽത്ത്കെയർ വികസിപ്പിച്ച ഐവി ബാഗുകളും മിക്സിംഗ് രീതിയും അവർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചു[41]രണ്ട് അസ്ഥി കോശ ഗവേഷണ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളുടെ സഹ-അന്വേഷക കൂടിയായിരുന്നു ജെമിസൺ. [25] പെൺ തവളകളെ അണ്ഡവിസർജ്ജനം നടത്താനും മുട്ടകൾക്ക് ബീജസങ്കലനം നടത്താനും തുടർന്ന് പൂജ്യം ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണത്തിൽ വാൽമാക്രികൾ എങ്ങനെ വളരുന്നുവെന്ന് നിരീക്ഷിക്കാനും അവർ പരീക്ഷണം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു.[42]

നാസയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള രാജി[തിരുത്തുക]

ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തിയ ശേഷം, സ്വന്തം കമ്പനി ആരംഭിക്കുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശ്യത്തോടെ 1993 മാർച്ചിൽ ജെമിസൺ നാസയിൽ നിന്ന് രാജിവച്ചു.[32][20][43]വിമാന യാത്രയ്ക്ക് ജെമിസനെ പരിശീലിപ്പിച്ച നാസ പരിശീലന മാനേജരും എഴുത്തുകാരനുമായ ഹോമർ ഹിക്കം അവൾ നാസ വിട്ടു പോയതിൽ ഖേദം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.[8]

നാസാനന്തര ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

1990 മുതൽ 1992 വരെ വേൾഡ് സിക്കിൾ സെൽ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന്റെ ഡയറക്ടർ ബോർഡിൽ ജെമിസൺ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു.[7] 1993-ൽ സാങ്കേതിക മുന്നേറ്റങ്ങളുടെയും സാമൂഹിക-സാംസ്കാരിക സ്വാധീനം പരിഗണിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കൺസൾട്ടിംഗ് സ്ഥാപനം ആയ ജെമിസൺ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് Inc. സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.[3][44] ഡൊറോത്തി ജെമിസൺ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഫോർ എക്സലൻസും ജെമിസൺ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും അമ്മയുടെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥം ഫൗണ്ടേഷന് പേരിടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[45]12 നും 16 നും ഇടയിൽ പ്രായമുള്ള വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കായുള്ള സയൻസ് ക്യാമ്പായ ദി എർത്ത് വി ഷെയർ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന്റെ പദ്ധതികളിലൊന്ന് ആണ് . 1994-ൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായ [46] ഡാർട്ട്മൗത്ത് കോളേജ്, കൊളറാഡോ സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് മൈൻസ്, ചോറ്റ് റോസ്മേരി ഹാൾ, യുണൈറ്റഡ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ്സിലെ മറ്റ് സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും, [45] അതുപോലെ തന്നെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര തലത്തിൽ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്ക, ടുണീഷ്യ, സ്വിറ്റ്സർലൻഡ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും ക്യാമ്പുകൾ നടന്നു.[47]

1995 മുതൽ 2002 വരെ ഡാർട്ട്മൗത്ത് കോളേജിലെ പരിസ്ഥിതി പഠന പ്രൊഫസറായിരുന്നു ജെമിസൺ. അവിടെ വികസ്വര രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഫോർ അഡ്വാൻസിംഗ് ടെക്നോളജിയെ ജെമിസൺ നിയന്ത്രിച്ചിരുന്നു.[46][48] 1999-ൽ കോർണൽ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ആൻഡ്രൂ ഡി. വൈറ്റ് പ്രൊഫസർ-അറ്റ്-ലാർജ് ആയിതീർന്നു.[46][49] സയൻസ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന് അനുകൂലമായും ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് ശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ താൽപ്പര്യമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിനുമായി ജെമിസൺ ശക്തമായി വാദിക്കുന്നു.[26] അമേരിക്കൻ മെഡിക്കൽ അസോസിയേഷൻ, അമേരിക്കൻ കെമിക്കൽ സൊസൈറ്റി, അസോസിയേഷൻ ഓഫ് സ്പേസ് എക്സ്പ്ലോറേഴ്സ്, അമേരിക്കൻ അസോസിയേഷൻ ഫോർ ദി അഡ്വാൻസ്മെന്റ് ഓഫ് സയൻസ് തുടങ്ങി വിവിധ ശാസ്ത്ര സംഘടനകളിൽ അവർ അംഗമാണ്.[50]1999-ൽ ജെമിസൺ ബയോസെന്റന്റ് കോർപ്പറേഷൻ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും എ.എഫ്.ടി.ഇയെ വാണിജ്യവത്ക്കരിക്കാനുള്ള ലൈസൻസ് നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[39][40]

2012-ൽ ഡൊറോത്തി ജെമിസൺ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഫോർ എക്സലൻസിലൂടെ 100 ഈയർ സ്റ്റാർഷിപ്പ് പ്രോജക്ടിന്റെ ലേലത്തിൽ ജെമിസൺ വിജയിച്ചു. കൂടുതൽ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കായി ഡൊറോത്തി ജെമിസൺ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഫോർ എക്സലൻസിന് 500,000 ഡോളർ ഗ്രാന്റ് ലഭിച്ചു. പുതിയ ഓർഗനൈസേഷൻ 100 ഈയർ സ്റ്റാർഷിപ്പ് എന്ന സംഘടനാ നാമം നിലനിർത്തി. 100 വർഷത്തെ സ്റ്റാർഷിപ്പിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ പ്രിൻസിപ്പലാണ് ജെമിസൺ.[51]

കാർഷിക ശാസ്ത്രം മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും പിന്തുടരാനും കൊച്ചുകുട്ടികളെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയെന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെയുള്ള സയൻസ് മാറ്റേഴ്സ് എന്ന സംരംഭത്തിനായി 2018-ൽ അവർ ബയർ ക്രോപ്പ് സയൻസ്, നാഷണൽ 4-എച്ച് കൗൺസിൽ എന്നിവയുമായി സഹകരിച്ചു.[52][53]

പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

കുട്ടികൾക്കായി എഴുതിയ ജെമിസന്റെ ആദ്യ പുസ്തകം, ഫൈൻഡ് വേർ ദ വിൻഡ് ഗോസ് (2001) അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളാണ്.[3][54]അവരുടെ കുട്ടിക്കാലം, സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡിൽ പീസ് കോർപ്സിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന സമയം, ഒരു ബഹിരാകാശയാത്രിക എന്നീ നിലകളെക്കുറിച്ച് അവർ വിവരിക്കുന്നു.[55]അവളുടെ മുൻകാല ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള കഥകൾ ഏറ്റവും ആകർഷകമാണെന്ന് സ്കൂൾ ലൈബ്രറി ജേണൽ കണ്ടെത്തി.[55]പ്രൊഫസർമാർ അവരോടു നടത്തിയ ഇടപെടലുകൾ അവരുടെ ബുദ്ധിയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലായിരുന്നില്ല മറിച്ച് സ്ത്രീയുടെ നിറത്തിനനുസരിച്ചുള്ള സ്റ്റീരിയോടൈപ്പ് രീതിയിലായിരുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അവളെഴുതിയ ആത്മകഥ ഒരു യാഥാർത്ഥ്യ വീക്ഷണം നൽകിയതായി പുസ്തക റിപ്പോർട്ട് കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. കുട്ടികളുടെ നാല് പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ പരമ്പരയായ ദ ട്രൂ ബുക്ക് 2013-ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത് ഡാന മീച്ചൻ റൗയുമായി സഹകരിച്ചാണ്.[57] ഈ ശ്രേണിയിലെ ഓരോ പുസ്തകത്തിലും ഒരു വെല്ലുവിളി നൽകുകയും അതിൽ "സത്യം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും" ചോദ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് ശരി അല്ലെങ്കിൽ തെറ്റാണോ ഉത്തരം എന്ന് കഥയുടെ അവസാനം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.[57]സ്കൂൾ ലൈബ്രറി ജേണൽ ഈ പരമ്പരയെ സൗരയൂഥത്തിന്റെ "സർവേകളെ ശരിയായി സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നു" എന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി. എന്നാൽ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും കാലഹരണപ്പെട്ട കുറച്ച് സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനെ വിമർശിച്ചു.[58]

1999 മുതൽ 2005 വരെ കോർനെൽ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ആൻഡ്രൂ ഡിക്സൺ വൈറ്റ് പ്രൊഫസറായി ജെമിസനെ നിയമിച്ചു.[61][62]

ശാസ്ത്ര സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സ്വകാര്യ, പൊതു ഗ്രൂപ്പുകൾക്ക് മുന്നിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സജീവ പബ്ലിക് സ്പീക്കറാണ് ജെമിസൺ. ചരിത്രപരമായ ഗവേഷണവും ജനിതക സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യകളും ഗവേഷണം നടത്തിയ പ്രശസ്തരായ എട്ട് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അമേരിക്കക്കാരുടെ കുടുംബ ചരിത്രം കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന ഹെൻ‌റി ലൂയിസ് ഗേറ്റ്സ് ജൂനിയർ ആതിഥേയം വഹിച്ച പി‌ബി‌എസ് ടെലിവിഷൻ ഹ്രസ്വപരമ്പരയിൽ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അമേരിക്കൻ ലൈവ്സിൽ 2006-ൽ ജെമിസൺ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു.[65]ജനിതക മേക്കപ്പിൽ ജെമിസൺ കാഴ്ചയിൽ 13% കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യക്കാരിയാണെന്നതിൽ അത്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടു.[65]അലബാമയിലെ തല്ലഡെഗ കൗണ്ടിയിലെ ഒരു തോട്ടത്തിൽ അവരുടെ പിതാക്കന്മാരിൽ ചിലർ അടിമകളാണെന്നും അവർ മനസ്സിലാക്കി.[66]

2007-ലെ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് ഫാഷൻ വീക്കിൽ ഹൃദ്രോഗത്തിനെതിരെ പോരാടുന്നതിന് പണം സ്വരൂപിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നതിനായി ലിൻ ഡെവൺ ഡിസൈൻ ചെയ്ത വസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ച് റെഡ് ഡ്രസ് ഹാർട്ട് ട്രൂത്ത് ഫാഷൻ ഷോയിൽ ജെമിസൺ പങ്കെടുത്തു. [67] അതേ വർഷം മെയ് മാസത്തിൽ ജെമിസൺ ഗ്രാജുവേഷന്റെ ആമുഖ പ്രസംഗയും ഹാർവി മഡ് കോളേജിന്റെ 52 വർഷത്തെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഡോക്ടർ ഓഫ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് ഡിഗ്രി ലഭിക്കുന്ന പതിനൊന്നാമത്തെ വ്യക്തിയുമായിരുന്നു.[68]

2008 ഫെബ്രുവരി 17 ന് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-അമേരിക്കൻ കോളേജ് വനിതകൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ സോറിറ്റിയായ ആൽഫ കാപ്പ ആൽഫ സ്ഥാപിതമായതിന്റെ നൂറാം വാർഷികത്തിന്റെ സവിശേഷ പ്രഭാഷകയായിരുന്നു ജെമിസൺ. സോറിറ്റിയുടെ ബാനർ അവളുടെ ഷട്ടിൽ ഫ്ലൈറ്റിൽ വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആൽഫ കപ്പ ആൽഫയ്ക്ക് ജെമിസൺ കൃതജ്ഞത അർപ്പിച്ചു. ആൽഫ കപ്പ ആൽഫയുടെ ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു അംഗമാണ് ജെമിസൺ.[69]

2009 മാർച്ചിൽ വാഷിംഗ്ടൺ ഡി.സി പബ്ലിക് സ്കൂളിൽ ഭാവിയുടെ വാഗ്ദാനം ആയ പെൺകുട്ടികളെ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള ചർച്ചാവേദിയിൽ ജെമിസൺ പ്രഥമ വനിത മിഷേൽ ഒബാമയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം പങ്കെടുത്തു.[70]2014-ൽ വെയ്ൻ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിലും അവരുടെ ഡോ. മാർട്ടിൻ ലൂതർ കിംഗ്, ജൂനിയർ വാർഷിക കൃതജ്ഞതാ ചടങ്ങിലെ ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണത്തിലും ജെമിസൺ പങ്കെടുത്തു.[71] 2016-ൽ സ്കൂളുകളിൽ ശാസ്ത്ര സാക്ഷരത പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനും മുന്നേറുന്നതിനുമായി ബയർ കോർപ്പറേഷനുമായി സഹകരിച്ച് പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകി.[72]2017 ഫെബ്രുവരിയിൽ മിഷിഗൺ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയുടെ "സ്ലേവറി ടു ഫ്രീഡം: ആൻ അമേരിക്കൻ ഒഡീസി" എന്ന പ്രഭാഷണ പരമ്പരയിലും അവർ പങ്കെടുത്തു.[73] 2017 മെയ് മാസത്തിൽ ജെമിസൺ റൈസ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രാരംഭ പ്രസംഗം നടത്തി.[74] വെസ്റ്റേൺ മിഷിഗൺ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ 100 വർഷത്തെ പദ്ധതിയിൽ, ശാസ്ത്രം, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, മറ്റ് വിഷയങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയും 2017 മെയ് മാസത്തിൽ അവർ ചർച്ച ചെയ്തു.[75]

2017-ൽ ലെഗോ ജെമിസൺ, മാർഗരറ്റ് ഹാമിൽട്ടൺ, സാലി റൈഡ്, നാൻസി ഗ്രേസ് റോമൻ എന്നിവരുടെ മിനിഫിഗറുകൾ "വിമൻ ഓഫ് നാസ" സെറ്റ് എന്നപേരിൽ പുറത്തിറക്കി.[76][77] ഗൂഗിൾ ഡൂഡിൽ 2019 മാർച്ച് 8 ന് (അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വനിതാ ദിനം) ജെമിസനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു ഉദ്ധരണി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു: "മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ പരിമിതമായ ഭാവനകൾ ഒരിക്കലും കുറച്ചുകാണരുത്."[78]
