ഫെമിനിസ്റ്റ്, മനുഷ്യാവകാശം, സമാധാനം, പൗരാവകാശം, മനോരോഗ വിരുദ്ധ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ മില്ലറ്റിന്റെ ചില പ്രധാന വിഷയങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. സ്ത്രീയുടെ അവകാശങ്ങളും മാനസികാരോഗ്യ പരിഷ്കരണവും പോലുള്ള പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾക്ക് കൂടുതലും പ്രചോദനമായിരുന്നത്. കൂടാതെ പലതും ലൈംഗികത, മാനസികാരോഗ്യം, ബന്ധങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ സൂക്ഷ്മനിരീക്ഷണം ചെയ്ത അവരുടെ ആത്മകഥാപരമായ ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളാണ്. 1960 കളിലും 1970 കളിലും മില്ലറ്റ് വാസെഡ സർവകലാശാല, ബ്രയിൻ മാവർ കോളേജ്, ബർണാർഡ് കോളേജ്, ബെർക്ക്‌ലിയിലെ കാലിഫോർണിയ സർവകലാശാല, എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപികയായിരുന്നു. പല രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും സർക്കാർ നൽകിയിരുന്ന പീഡനത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ദി പൊളിറ്റിക്സ് ഓഫ് ക്രൂവൽറ്റി (1994), അമ്മയുമായുള്ള അവരുടെ ബന്ധത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു പുസ്തകം മദർ മില്ലറ്റ് (2001) എന്നിവയാണ് പിന്നീട് എഴുതിയ ചില കൃതികൾ. 2011 നും 2013 നും ഇടയിൽ, സാഹിത്യത്തിനുള്ള ലാംഡ പയനിയർ അവാർഡ് നേടി. കലകൾക്കായുള്ള യോക്കോ ഓനോയുടെ കറേജ് അവാർഡ് ലഭിക്കുകയും ദേശീയ വനിതാ ഹാൾ ഓഫ് ഫെയിമിൽ ഇടം നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.

മില്ലറ്റ് ജനിച്ച് വളർന്നത് മിനസോട്ടയിലാണ്. തുടർന്ന് അവരുടെ മുതിർന്ന ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും മാൻഹട്ടനിലും ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ പൗകീപ്‌സിയിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച വുമൺസ് ആർട്ട് കോളനിയിലും ചെലവഴിച്ചു. ഇത് 2012-ൽ മില്ലറ്റ് സെന്റർ ഫോർ ആർട്സ് ആയി മാറി. മില്ലറ്റ് ഒരു ലെസ്ബിയൻ ആയി പുറത്തുവന്നു. ആദ്യകാല ജീവിതവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും[തിരുത്തുക]

1934 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 14 ന് മിനസോട്ടയിലെ സെന്റ് പോളിൽ ജെയിംസ് ആൽബർട്ട്, ഹെലൻ (നീ ഫീലി) മില്ലറ്റ് എന്നിവരുടെ മകളായി കാതറിൻ മുറെ മില്ലറ്റ് ജനിച്ചു. മില്ലറ്റ് പറയുന്നതനുസരിച്ച്, അവളെ തല്ലിച്ചതച്ച എഞ്ചിനീയറായ അച്ഛനെ അവൾ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു. [4] 14 വയസുള്ളപ്പോൾ കുടുംബത്തെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച ഒരു മദ്യപാനിയായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം "അവരെ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഏൽപ്പിച്ചു".[5][6] Her mother was a teacher[6] അമ്മ അദ്ധ്യാപികയും ഇൻഷുറൻസ് വിൽപ്പനക്കാരിയുമായിരുന്നു. ഓക്‌സ്‌ഫോർഡ് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയ ശേഷം[6][11] നോർത്ത് കരോലിന യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിൽ മില്ലറ്റ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിപ്പിച്ചു, എന്നാൽ കല പഠിക്കാൻ അവൾ മിഡ് സെമസ്റ്റർ വിട്ടു.[6]

ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിൽ കിന്റർഗാർട്ടൻ അധ്യാപികയായി ജോലി ചെയ്ത അവർ 1959 മുതൽ 1961 വരെ ശിൽപവും പെയിന്റും പഠിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ജപ്പാനിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറുകയും ശിൽപകല പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മില്ലറ്റ് സഹ ശിൽപിയായ ഫ്യൂമിയോ യോഷിമുറയെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി[4][9] ടോക്കിയോയിലെ മിനാമി ഗാലറിയിൽ തന്റെ ആദ്യ ഏക വനിത പ്രദർശനം നടത്തി[6] വസേഡ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. അവൾ 1963-ൽ ജപ്പാൻ വിട്ട് ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ ലോവർ ഈസ്റ്റ് സൈഡിലേക്ക് മാറി[12]
