ഫ്രാന്സിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമാണ് പാരിസ്. വടക്കന് ഫ്രാന്സിലെ സെയ്നെ നദിയുടെ തീരത്ത് ഇല്-ഡി-ഫ്രാന്സ് പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്തായാണ് ഈ നഗരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഭരണ പ്രദേശത്തിനകത്തുള്ള പാരിസ് നഗരത്തിന്റെ (1860ന് ശേഷം കാര്യമായ മാറ്റം വന്നിട്ടില്ല) ജനസംഖ്യ ഏകദേശം 2,167,994 (ജനുവരി 2006) ആണ്.[3] ഭരണ പ്രദേശവും കഴിഞ്ഞ് വളരെ വ്യാപിച്ച് കിടക്കുന്ന പാരിസ് യുണൈറ്റ് അര്ബൈനിലെ (അല്ലെങ്കില് നഗര പ്രദേശം) ജനസംഖ്യ ഏകദേശം 99.3 ലക്ഷമാണ് (2005ല്).[4]120 ലക്ഷം ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള പാരിസ് എയ്റെ അര്ബൈന്[5] (അല്ലെങ്കില് മെട്രോപൊളിറ്റന് പ്രദേശം) യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള മെട്രോപൊളിറ്റന് പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വ്യാപാര, സാംസ്കാരിക കേന്ദ്രമാണ് പാരിസ്. രാഷ്ട്രീയം, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, വിനോദം, വാര്ത്താമാദ്ധ്യമം, ഫാഷന്, ശാസ്ത്രം എന്നീ രംഗങ്ങളില് പാരിസ് ചെലുത്തുന്ന സ്വാധീനം അതിനെ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ആഗോള നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്നാക്കുന്നു.[7] ഫോര്ച്ചുണ് മാസിക പുറത്തിറക്കിയ ഫോര്ച്ചുണ് ഗ്ലോബല് 500 പട്ടികയിലുള്ള 36 കമ്പനികള് പാരിസ് പ്രദേശം ആസ്ഥാനമാക്കി പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നു.[8] യുനെസ്കോ, ഒഇസിഡി, ഐസിസി തുടങ്ങിയ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനകളും പാരിസ് കേന്ദ്രമാക്കി പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രമാണ് പാരിസ്. വര്ഷംതോറും ഏകദേശം 3 കോടി വിദേശി വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളാണ് ഇവിടെയെത്തുന്നത്.[9]
1900, 1924 എന്നീ വര്ഷങ്ങളിലെ ഒളിമ്പിക്സ് മല്സരങ്ങള് ഇവിടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെട്ടത്[10] [11]
