ഫ്രാൻസിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമാണ് പാരിസ്. വടക്കൻ ഫ്രാൻസിലെ സീൻ നദിയുടെ തീരത്ത് ഇൽ-ഡി-ഫ്രാൻസ് പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്തായാണ് ഈ നഗരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ലൗ, സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ആർട്ട്, ദി മോസ്റ്റ് റൊമാന്റിക് സിറ്റി എന്നീ വിശേഷണങ്ങളിലും പാരീസ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഭരണ പ്രദേശത്തിനകത്തുള്ള പാരിസ് നഗരത്തിന്റെ (1860ന് ശേഷം കാര്യമായ മാറ്റം വന്നിട്ടില്ല) ജനസംഖ്യ ഏകദേശം 2,167,994 (ജനുവരി 2006) ആണ്.[3] ഭരണ പ്രദേശവും കഴിഞ്ഞ് വളരെ വ്യാപിച്ച് കിടക്കുന്ന പാരിസ് യുണൈറ്റ് അർബൈനിലെ (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നഗര പ്രദേശം) ജനസംഖ്യ ഏകദേശം 99.3 ലക്ഷമാണ് (2005ൽ).[4]120 ലക്ഷം ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള പാരിസ് എയ്റെ അർബൈൻ[5] (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മെട്രോപൊളിറ്റൻ പ്രദേശം) യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള മെട്രോപൊളിറ്റൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വ്യാപാര, സാംസ്കാരിക കേന്ദ്രമാണ് പാരിസ്. രാഷ്ട്രീയം, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, വിനോദം, വാർത്താമാദ്ധ്യമം, ഫാഷൻ, ശാസ്ത്രം എന്നീ രംഗങ്ങളിൽ പാരിസ് ചെലുത്തുന്ന സ്വാധീനം അതിനെ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ആഗോള നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്നാക്കുന്നു.[7] ഫോർച്ചുൺ മാസിക പുറത്തിറക്കിയ ഫോർച്ചുൺ ഗ്ലോബൽ 500 പട്ടികയിലുള്ള 36 കമ്പനികൾ പാരിസ് പ്രദേശം ആസ്ഥാനമാക്കി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.[8] യുനെസ്കോ, ഒഇസിഡി, ഐസിസി തുടങ്ങിയ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനകളും പാരിസ് കേന്ദ്രമാക്കി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രമാണ് പാരിസ്. വർഷംതോറും ഏകദേശം 3 കോടി വിദേശി വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളാണ് ഇവിടെയെത്തുന്നത്.[9]
1900, 1924 എന്നീ വർഷങ്ങളിലെ ഒളിമ്പിക്സ് മൽസരങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെട്ടത്[10] [11]
