Wikimedia Foundation projects are multilingual, with wikis in hundreds of languages being actively worked on and plenty more ready to go. The Wikipedia Embassy is a central place for resources to help with cross-language issues — site-wide policy and software decisions that affect all of us and interlanguage linking. The Malayalam wikipedia embassy has been started for communication between Malayalam wikipedia, and other language wikipedias.

[തിരുത്തുക] Sharing Best Practices

I am Natkeeran, admin from Tamil Wiki. This is just a small effort to share best practices between indi wikis.

Similar efforts:

Among the Indian Wikis Malayalam wiki is of good quality and growing considerably fast. Relatively, it has a large contributor base than other indi wikis. How did get this support? What are your priorities?

[തിരുത്തുക] Tamil Wiki +ve

  • Wiki Projects (Countires, Engineering, Chemical Elements etc)
  • Subject Heading List
  • Vocabulary lists and Wikionary (100000+ technical terms)
  • Bot know how, but limited use
  • Focus on Math, Science, Technology
  • Good diaspora involvment

[തിരുത്തുക] Tamil Wiki –ve

  • Limited native user base (from Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malyasia, Sigapore)
  • Very limited media exposure
  • Encyclopedia writing style (mabye a -ve)
  • Political and Lanauage issues are troblesome.

[തിരുത്തുക] Jyothis Comments

Natkeeran, First of all, thank you very much for starting this discussion. Let this discussion be a starting point for the exchange of ideas between Wikis. It is indeed a great idea to share the ideals and practices that each wiki holds on to.

In Malayalam Wikipedia, the quality of articles has a higher priority than the number of articles. We have decided that we will not keep articles that does not have atleast basic information included. Editors take utmost care to include whatever possible, and as they learn more about the Wiki style of writing, they will urge the new users to follow the standards of writing, articles formats and Title formats which we adhere to.

Regarding the users, we do not have many users residing in Kerala. Most of the users with a few exceptions are located outside kerala. However, I would say that we have a handful of people who are very active and announces that I sleep in Wikipedia :). We have editors who comes from very diverse backgrounds and that helps us cover many different subjects. The diverse locations of people also helps us in covering location based subjects too.

The primary catalyst to the amount of users lately is media coverage and blog activism. With a good amount of people blogging in Malayalam, We have a potential user base and editor base in making. Mathrubhumi, one of the main daily in Malayalam presented a nice article on Wikipedia on their supplement's main story. We used to conduct a blog based quiz program earlier, which can be completely answered if we look in wiki. This has also helped a little to increase the popularity of wiki among malayalam blog community. Every editor acts as an ambassador whenever they get a chance. We invite good bloggers and friends to wiki on any available occasion. Without a doubt, the users and editors who support this initiative unconditionally are an asset to our wiki.

Nice to see the effort of collaboration. Rome was not built in a day. What we need to do is a collective/organized effort to attract people's atention. We need to get people wiki-aware. The pearl in hand has more value than a diamond hidden in mud, of which no one has any knowledge about its existance. We know people from many facets of life. Why not we spread the word about wikipedia to people we know? word of mouth has been a marketing strategy for a while. the same can be applied here too :-). If we have teachers in the list, they can do a lot to promote usage of wiki. they can introduce wiki to students and encourage them to look at and contribute to wiki in their capacity. schools and other educational institutions are the bet way to lay foundation on creating a good user base. It is easier to get editors, once you have a user base.

Thanks again and looking forward to hear your thoughts about this. Questions and comments are welcome

Glad to see this discussion going. Jyotis, you make good points, and I think some of the marketing is surely lacking in Tamil Wiki. --Selva 19:49, 21 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the comments. We can definitely benefit from sharing information and ideas. At Tamil wiki we have done good ground work, Policies, Guides, Initiatives. We did not just translate, we adopted and innovated to match our needs. From early on we had a minimum standard (3 lines including the definition, category, internal links, and inter wikilinks). We focused on quality, but we understood that it was an on going process.

As noted above we try to focus on non-controversial subjects, but at the same time it was important to record important current events (ex Eelam War).

We have been advised that our writing style is a bit strict according to some popular media standards. For instance, we try to use Tamil technical words whenever possible, and some people prefer using Tamil transliteration of English technical words. We also have minor dialect differences between Eelam Tamil and TN Tamil. Tamil Wiki has been a forum to develop an understanding and a common ground.

I am surprised to hear that most of the Malayala Wiki users are from aboard. It is the same case in Tamil Wiki, and like you noted it provides diversity. We have made a point to seek out Tamils across globe. This adds first hand local knowledge, as well as pictures.

There is a sizable Tamil blog community, and that is usually our recruiting place. But, we did not reach out to the extent you have done.

Learning Tamil Rendering, Typing, and Wiki are definitely notable technical barriers. Even average computer savy people find it difficult.

We conduct Tamil Wikipedia Annual Review at the end of each year, assessing our progress and brainstorming and planning our next year activities. We have done it for 2005, 2006, 2007. This is something you may want to consider.

We also have Tamil Wiki projects (ta:விக்கிப்பீடியா:திட்டங்கள் ஒருங்கிணைப்புப் பக்கம்). These are projects with a definite goal, time allocation, and primes.

We give considerable attention to vocabulary. This is essential for Science Writing and Technical Writing. These are not highly developed in Tamil as in English, but some Tamil Wikipedia articles provide good examples.

We know we will never have articles about all videos games. Our aim is to cover important subjects such as math as extensively as possible.

Also, you may want to suggest (50 -100) articles about Kerala, Kerala culture, way of life, local technology, Malayalam and we can give priority to it.

We are currently exploring ways to create diverse articles using bots ta:விக்கிப்பீடியா:தானியங்கிக் கட்டுரையாக்கம். This requires information gathering.

In India, we can raise awrness about Wiki in general, and urge people to contribute to their local languages. Perhaps, the efforts to establish a Wikipedia Indian Chapter should be accelerated. Perhaps, even a Wikimania in India. Not impossible. --Natkeeran 20:02, 21 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 2008 (UTC)

[തിരുത്തുക] pictures

I used to contribute via pictures uploaded to malayalam wiki and once it reached 500 I stopped it and started uploading to other wikis including Tamil. But Tamil wiki admins doesn't even seem to be aware of who is doing such activity, while in malayalam we promote such activism by selecting pictures as the freatured pictures and also by encouraging words by commenting on the pictures. This will certainly drive the contributors happy.

I used to upload pictures from flickr where the licences have been released under CC to malayalam and also to Commons. and a lot of requesting to release the licences under CC is also done from my part if the picture is found appropriate for wikipedia. Many succumb/oblige. I recently posted a request a similar request as a thread of discussion in two similar groups in flickr namely malayalikkoottam and India-Tamil nadu. While I got overwhelming support from the ealier which can be seen here the later completely denied such activity and almost banned me from the moderatorship

does this show some attitude problems with the tamizh speaking people towards the wikipedia or are they just scared of letting their picture copyable on the net

--ചള്ളിയാന്‍ ♫ ♫ 03:05, 22 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your notes and the effort. It bit of both, people are bit scared about letting go of their copyright, and probably they do not care about the public resource. In most cases sharing it common does not cost the person anything. We just have to campaign bit more about the benefit of public resources. Also, Wikipedia is now very strict about its pictures policy. We are playing a bit of catchup. I will delete the pciture you noted if necessary. --Natkeeran 23:26, 23 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 2008 (UTC)

[തിരുത്തുക] Transliteration of long strings

In all the South Asian wikipedias with built-in transliteration, transliteration of long strings sometimes is not possible. Eg-sagarmatha (Nepalese name of Mt. Everest) is transliterated as സഗരമാത on typing sa-ga-ra-maa-thaa rather than സഗരമാതാ. Is there some way to fix this?--Eukesh 21:53, 11 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 2008 (UTC)

if you want to type സഗരമാതഅ, you may try saagarmaatha_a. --ജ്യോതിസ് 22:30, 11 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 2008 (UTC)

or For സാഗരമാതാ try saagaramaathA--പ്രവീണ്‍:സം‌വാദം 07:41, 13 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions. But my concern was regarding the enabling of "aa" thing rather than the other two. Thanks again. --Eukesh 10:40, 21 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 2008 (UTC)

[തിരുത്തുക] India Week on Russian Wikipedia edition

Dear colleagues, Russian Wikipedia edition is starting a week of India on Nov 7-17, 2008. During this period, the Theme Week project participants and other Wikipedia users will try to cover as many India-related topics as possible. Your contribution to this project would be very much appreciated. --Munroe 23:09, 6 നവംബര്‍ 2008 (UTC)

[തിരുത്തുക] What are you editing?

I couldn't understand one thing is what are you people editing on Malayalam Wikipedia? Because most of the articles on Malayalam wiki are not more than 3-4 lines. Are you people just editing like adding and deleting points (.) to increase edits to finally increase the overall depth only? रोहित रावत 16:24, 15 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 2009 (UTC)

Rohit, good question. Please go ahead and start comparing the version diffs on each page and figure it out. On a second thought, why dont you learn ml and join us to find out what we do? We could use one more hand as an editor here ;-) --ജ്യോതിസ് 16:33, 15 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I would have joined you but unfortunately I don't know Malayalam language but I'll help if I find that it is needed and I can fulfill it. Thanks a lot for the answer. रोहित रावत 02:28, 16 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 2009 (UTC)
Thats alright. I would be happy to see you contributing to Hi wiki, if you can spend enough time. Essentially its all a part of the same family. --ജ്യോതിസ് 03:10, 16 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 2009 (UTC)

Rohit.. I have wondered about the quality of hindi wiki, while trying to expand the article of Lohri in malayalam wiki by referring the hindi version. Most of the Malayalees not even heard about the Lohri festival. You can also compare this article to find our the difference. --Vssun 04:37, 16 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 2009 (UTC)
