റുമേനിയയിൽ ജനിച്ച അമേരിക്കക്കാരനായ ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരനും, പ്രൊഫസറും, രാഷ്ട്രീയപ്രവർത്തകനും, സമാധാനത്തിനുള്ള നോബൽ സമ്മാനം ലഭിച്ചയാളും, ഹോളോകോസ്റ്റ് തടവിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടയാളും ആയിരുന്നു ഈലീ വീസൽ (Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel). KBE (/ˈɛli viˈzɛl/, ഹീബ്രു: אֱלִיעֶזֶר וִיזֶל‎, ’Ēlí‘ézer Vízēl;[1][2] സെപ്തംബർ 30, 1928 – ജൂലൈ 2, 2016). മിക്കവാറും ഫ്രഞ്ചിലും ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലുമായി ഓഷ്വിറ്റ്സിലും ബുകൻവാൾഡിലും തടവിലായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ ഉള്ള അനുഭവങ്ങൾ അടങ്ങിയ രാത്രി എന്ന പുസ്തകമടക്കം 57 ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ ഇദ്ദേഹം രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.[3]

Along with writing, he was a professor of the humanities at Boston University, which created the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies in his honor. He was involved with Jewish causes, and helped establish the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. In his political activities he also campaigned for victims of oppression in places like South Africa, Nicaragua, Kosovo, and genocide in Sudan. He publicly condemned the 1915 Armenian Genocide and remained a strong defender of human rights during his lifetime. He was described as "the most important Jew in America" by the Los Angeles Times.[4]

Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, at which time the Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," stating that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps", as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace", Wiesel had delivered a message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity.[5] He was a founding board member of the New York Human Rights Foundation and remained active throughout his life.[6][7]

വീസൽ അന്തേവാസിയായിരുന്ന തടങ്കൽ ക്യാമ്പിൽ ഇടതു കയ്യിൽ "A-7713" എന്ന നമ്പർ മുദ്രകുത്തിയിരുന്നു[9].[10] 1945 ഏപ്രിൽ 11 നു യുഎസ് മൂന്നാം ആർമി ബുഷൻവാൾടിൽ നിന്ന് വീസലടക്കമുള്ള തടവുകാരെരെ മോചിപ്പിച്ചു[11].

1976 മുതൽ ബോസ്റ്റൺ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിലെ ആൻഡ്രൂ മെല്ലൻ പ്രൊഫസ്സർ ഓഫ് ഹ്യുമാനിറ്റീസ് എന്ന പദവിയിൽ മാനവികവിഷയങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു[12]. മതവും തത്ത്വചിന്തയും ഇതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടു.[13]
