ഇസ്ലാം മത വിശ്വാസികളുടെ ആരാധനാസ്ഥലമാണ് മസ്ജിദ് അഥവാ മുസ്ലിം പള്ളി. ( Arabic: مسجد ,English: Mosque). മസ്ജിദ് എന്നാൽ സാഷ്ടാംഗം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള സ്ഥലം എന്നാണ് ഭാഷാർത്ഥം. ജുമാമസ്ജിദ്, ജുമാഅത്ത് പള്ളി എന്നും പറയാറുണ്ട്. ജുമുഅ എന്ന വാക്കിൻറെ അറബി അർഥം ഒരുമിച്ച് കൂടുക എന്നതാണ്. ജുമുഅ നടക്കുന്നത് വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചകളിൽ ഉച്ചക്കാണ്. അന്നേ ദിവസം പള്ളികളിൽ ഉപദേശ പ്രസംഗം അഥവാ ഖുതുബ നടക്കുന്നു. ജുമുഅ ഖുതുബ നടത്തുന്ന ആളിനെ ഖതീബ് എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. കേരളീയർ പൊതുവെ മുസ്ലിം പള്ളി എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. നമസ്കാരം (നിസ്കാരം, Arabic: صلاة, സ്വലാത്ത്) നടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം എന്നതിനുപുറമെ, അറിയിപ്പുകേന്ദ്രമായും മതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസകേന്ദ്രമായും തർക്കപരിഹാരകേന്ദ്രമായും മസ്ജിദ് ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇമാം പ്രാർഥനകൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകുന്നു.
മിനാരങ്ങളും താഴികക്കുടങ്ങളും അടങ്ങുന്ന ഇസ്ലാമിക വാസ്തുവിദ്യ പ്രകടമാക്കുന്നവയാണ് സാധാരണ പള്ളികൾ. കേരളത്തിലെ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ പുരാതന മസ്ജിദുകളിലും കേരളീയ വാസ്തുകലയാണ് കാണുപ്പെടുന്നത്.

മസ്ജിദ് പല ഭാഷകളിലും പലപേരിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈജിപ്തുകാർ ജ എന്നത് ഗ എന്നാണ് ഉച്ചരിക്കാറുള്ളത്. ആയതിനാൽ മസ്ഗിദ് എന്നു പറയുന്നു. ഈ മസ്ഗിദ് ആണത്രേ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ മസ്ക്ക് അഥവാ മൊസ്ക്ക്(Mosque) ആയത് എന്നു കരുതുന്നു. സ്പാനിഷുകാർ മെസ്ക്വിറ്റ (mezquita) എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു.[1]. യൂറോപ്യന്മാർ മസ്ജിദുകളെ പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് മൊസെയ്ഖ്, മസ്കി, മോസ്കി, മോസ്കേഹ് എന്നൊക്കെയാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് ഇവ മോസ്കായി മാറുകയാണുണ്ടായത്.[2]
ചരിത്രം
ഇന്ന് മിനാരങ്ങളും താഴികക്കുടങ്ങളും തുറന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളും അടങ്ങുന്ന മസ്ജിദുകൾ ലോകമെമ്പാടും കാണാമെങ്കിലും ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ ആദ്യകാലത്തെ പള്ളികൾ വളരെ ലളിതമായ ശൈലിയിലുള്ളതായിരുന്നു.പ്രവാചകന്റെ മസ്ജിദ്(മസ്ജിദുന്നബവി)ഈന്തപ്പനയോല മേഞ്ഞതും താഴെ ചരൽ വിരിച്ചതും ആയിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഒരുപാട് പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ കീഴിൽ വരികയും പ്രാദേശികമായ ഇസ്ലാമിക വാസ്തുവിദ്യ വികസിക്കുകയും വ്യതസ്ഥ ശൈലിയിലുള്ള മസ്ജിദുകൾ ഉണ്ടാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
നിർമ്മാണ ശൈലി
പലരീതിയിലുള്ള വാസ്തുശൈലികൾ പള്ളികളിൽ കാണാമെങ്കിലും എല്ലാ മസ്ജിദുകളിലും പൊതുവായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ചില കാര്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്.

നമസ്കാരത്തിനായി അംഗശുദ്ധി (വുദു) വരുത്തുവാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന കൃത്രിമ തടാകം. ആധുനികകാലത്ത് മസ്ജിദുകളിൽ വ്യാപകമായി പൈപ്പുകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്നു.
