സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തില്‍ത്തില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന ജീവികളാണ് സസ്യങ്ങള്‍. വൃക്ഷങ്ങള്‍, ഓഷധികള്‍, കുറ്റിച്ചെടികള്‍, തൃണങ്ങള്‍, വൈനുകള്‍, ഫേണുകള്‍, പായലുകള്‍, ഹരിതനിറമുള്ള ആല്‍ഗകള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു. ബീജസസ്യങ്ങള്‍, ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകള്‍, ഫേണുകള്‍, അനുഫേണുകള്‍ എനങ്ങ്ങനെ നിര്‍വചിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നഏകദേശം 350,000 സസ്യവര്‍‌ഗങ്ങള്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ നലനില്‍ക്കുന്നതായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 2004 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും ഏകദേശം 287,655 വര്‍ഗങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. അവയില്‍ 258,650 സപുഷ്പികളും and 18,000 ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകളും. ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങള്‍ അവയ്ക്കാവശ്യമായ ഊര്‍ജത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യപങ്കും സ്വരൂപിക്കുന്നത് സൂര്യനില്‍ നിന്ന് പ്രകാശസംശ്ലേഷണം എന്ന ഒരു പ്രക്രിയ വഴി ആണ്.
