യുദ്ധേതരഘട്ടത്തിൽ ശത്രുക്കൾക്കെതിരായുള്ള വീരതയോടും, ആത്മത്യാഗത്തോടും കൂടിയുള്ള അർപ്പണത്തിനു നൽകുന്ന ഇന്ത്യൻ സൈനിക ബഹുമതിയാണ് ശൗര്യ ചക്ര. യുദ്ധസമയത്തുനൽകുന്ന വീര ചക്രക്ക് തത്തുല്യമായ ബഹുമതിയാണിത്. ഈ ബഹുമതി സായുധസേനയിൽ അംഗമായുള്ളവർക്കും, അംഗമല്ലാത്തവർക്കും നൽകുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോൾ മരണാനന്തര ബഹുമതിയായും ഇതു നൽകാറുണ്ട്.

1952 ജനുവരി നാലിനാണ് അശോക ചക്ര ക്ലാസ് 3 എന്ന പേരിൽ ഈ ബഹുമതി നിലവിൽ വന്നത്. 1967 ലാണ് ഈ ബഹുമതി ശൌര്യ ചക്ര എന്ന് പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്തത്. രാഷ്ട്രപതിയാണ് ഈ ബഹുമതി സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്.
