മധ്യജർമ്മനിയിലെ തുറിഞ്ചിയ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും ഒരു വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ-ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രവുമാണ് യെന (ജർമ്മനിൽ Jena (/ˈjeɪnə/; ജർമ്മൻ ഉച്ചാരണം: [ˈjeːna] (
listen))[2]). യെനായിൽ അഞ്ചിലൊരാൾ ഒരു വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയാണ്. 1558-ൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായ ഫ്രെഡ്രിക്ക് ഷില്ലർ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ 18,000-ത്തോളം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ഏൺസ്റ്റ്-ആബെ ഫാഹോഹ്ഷൂളിൽ അയ്യായിരത്തോളം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുമുണ്ട്.[3]
പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുവരെ ചെറുപട്ടണമായിരുന്ന യെന കാൾ സെയ്സ്, ഷോട്ട് കമ്പനികളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ സൂക്ഷ്മദർശിനികളുടെയും ദൂരദർശിനികളുടെയും നിർമ്മാണകേന്ദ്രമായി. ഇവ ഇന്നും നഗരത്തിന്റെ സാമ്പത്തികമേഖലയുടെ നെടുംതൂണാണ്. ഗവേഷണം, സോഫ്റ്റ്-വേർ , ബയോടെക്നോളജി എന്നിവയാണ് മറ്റ് പ്രധാന ഉൽപ്പന്നങ്ങൾ. യെന ഓർക്കിടുകൾക്കും പ്രശസ്തമാണ്.[4]
