അമേരിക്കയിലെ 50 സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെയാണ് ഈ 50 നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ പ്രതിനിധികരിക്കുന്നത്. ചുവപ്പും വെള്ളയും നിറങ്ങളിലുള്ള വരകൾ ബ്രിട്ടണിൽനിന്നും ആദ്യമായി സ്വാതന്ത്രയ്ം നേടിയ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ 13 കോളനികളെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ പതിമൂന്ന് കോളനികളാണ് അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ.[1] നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളും വരകളും(Stars and Stripes),[2] ഓൾഡ് ഗ്ലോറി (Old Glory),[3] സ്റ്റാർ സ്പാങ്ല്ഡ് ബാനർ (The Star-Spangled Banner) എന്നീ വിളിപേരുകളും ഈ പതാകയ്ക്കുണ്ട്.

ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന 50നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുള്ള പതാകയുടെ രൂപകല്പന റോബർട്ട് ജി. ഹെഫ്റ്റ് (Robert G. Heft) എന്നയാളാണ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്.ഹെഫ്റ്റിന് അന്ന് 17 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു പ്രായം. 1958 ഹൈസ്കൂൾ പ്രൊജക്റ്റിന്റെ ഭാഗമായാണ് ഹെഫ്റ്റ് ഇത് രൂപകല്പനചെയ്തത്. അന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് B− ഗ്രേഡാണ് ഇതിന് ലഭിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് ദേശീയപതാകയ്ക്കായി ഹെഫ്റ്റിന്റെ രൂപകല്പന തിരഞ്ഞെടത്തതിനുശേഷം അധ്യാപകൻ B− ഗ്രേഡിനെ A ഗ്രേഡിലേക്ക് ഉയർത്തുകയുണ്ടായി .
