2017-ൽ വെഴ്സായ് കൊട്ടാരത്തിന് 7,700,000 സന്ദർശകരെ ലഭിച്ചു. ഇത് ഓൾ-ഡി-ഫ്രാൻസ് മേഖലയിലെ ലൂവ്രേയ്ക്കു തൊട്ടുപിന്നിലും ഈഫൽ ടവറിന് മുന്നിലും ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ആളുകൾ സന്ദർശിച്ച രണ്ടാമത്തെ സ്മാരകമായി മാറി. [3]

വനങ്ങളാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കൊട്ടാരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലം ആദ്യം ചെറിയ ഗ്രാമവും ഒരു പള്ളിയുടെ കൈവശവുമായിരുന്നു. ഗോണ്ടി കുടുംബത്തിന്റെയും സെന്റ് ജൂലിയൻ കന്യാസ്ത്രീമഠത്തിന്റെയും ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലായിരുന്നു ഇത്. 1589-ൽ ഹെൻ‌റി നാലാമൻ രാജാവ് അവിടെ വേട്ടയാടുകയും ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ സത്രത്തിൽ താമസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകൻ, ലൂയി പതിമൂന്നാമൻ, 1607-ൽ വേട്ടയാടലിനായി അവിടെയെത്തി. 1610-ൽ ലൂയി പതിമൂന്നാമൻ രാജാവായതിനുശേഷം, ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങി കുറച്ച് സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി 1623-24 ൽ മാർബിൾ മുറ്റത്തോടുകൂടിയ രണ്ട് നിലകളുള്ള വേട്ടയാടൽ സൗകര്യത്തിനുള്ള ഒരു ലോഡ്ജ് നിർമ്മിച്ചു.[4] 1630 നവംബറിൽ ഡ്യൂപ്സ് ഡേ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പരിപാടിയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം അവിടെ താമസിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. രാജാവിന്റെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി കർദിനാൾ റിഷലൂവിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കൾ, രാജാവിന്റെ അമ്മ മാരി ഡി മെഡിസിയുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ സർക്കാർ പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. രാജാവ് ഈ തന്ത്രത്തെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തി അമ്മയെ പ്രവാസത്തിലേക്ക് അയച്ചു.[5]
