ജീവിതരേഖ[തിരുത്തുക]
1960ൽ പട്ടാളത്തിൽ ചേർന്നു. 32 വർഷത്തിനിടയിൽ അഞ്ചുവർഷത്തെ (1992-'97) ഇടവേളയൊഴികെ ബാക്കി കാലമെല്ലാം പ്രസിഡന്റായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1979 ഫെബ്രുവരിയിൽ അട്ടിമറിയിലൂടെ അധികാരം നേടി. 1992ലെ ബഹുകക്ഷി തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു. ആഭ്യന്തരയുദ്ധത്തിനു പിന്നാലെ 1997ൽ വീണ്ടും അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്നു. 2004ൽ വീണ്ടും ജയിച്ചു.
