സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ജീവികളാണ് സസ്യങ്ങൾ. വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾ, ഓഷധികൾ, കുറ്റിച്ചെടികൾ, തൃണങ്ങൾ, വള്ളികൾ, പന്നലുകൾ, പായലുകൾ, ഹരിതനിറമുള്ള ആൽഗകൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ബീജസസ്യങ്ങൾ, ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകൾ, ഫേണുകൾ, അനുഫേണുകൾ എനങ്ങ്ങനെ നിർവചിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നഏകദേശം 350,000 സസ്യവർഗങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോൾ നലനിൽക്കുന്നതായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 2004 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും ഏകദേശം 287,655 വർഗങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. അവയിൽ 258,650 സപുഷ്പികളും and 18,000 ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകളും. ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങൾ അവയ്ക്കാവശ്യമായ ഊർജ്ജത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യപങ്കും സ്വരൂപിക്കുന്നത് സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രകാശസംശ്ലേഷണം എന്ന ഒരു പ്രക്രിയ വഴി ആണ്.
രണ്ടു തരം സസ്യങ്ങളാണ് ഭൂമിയിൽ നിലവിലുള്ളത്. കരോലസ് ലിയണസ് എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ് ആദ്യമായി സസ്യങ്ങളെ ഈ രീതിയിൽ വർഗ്ഗീകരിച്ചത്.
