അകശേരുക്കളിൽ (നട്ടെല്ലില്ലാത്ത മൃഗങ്ങൾ), ഒച്ചുകൾ, സ്ലഗ്ഗുകൾ, കണവ, നീരാളി, ചിപ്പികൾ, മുത്തുച്ചിപ്പികൾ, ചിറ്റോണുകൾ എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള സമാന ഗ്രൂപ്പുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മൊളസ്കകളെക്കുറിച്ച് (ഫൈലം മൊളസ്ക) പഠിക്കുന്ന ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രശാഖയാണ് മലക്കോളജി. വിവരിച്ച ജീവിവർഗങ്ങളുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ ആർത്രോപോഡകൾക്ക് ശേഷം മൃഗങ്ങളുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലിയ വിഭാഗമായ,[1] അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന 100,000 ഇനങ്ങളുള്ള (200,000 വരെ ആകാം) മോളസ്കുകൾ നമ്മുടെ ഗ്രഹത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന ജീവജാലങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയിലെ പ്രധാന കണ്ണിയായി ആഴക്കടൽ മുതൽ വരണ്ട മരുഭൂമികൾ വരെ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാത്തരം ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥകളിലും അവയെ കാണാം. ഭൂരിഭാഗം മോളസ്‌ക് ഇനങ്ങൾക്കും കട്ടി കൂടിയപുറംതോട് (കക്ക) കാണാം. ചരിത്രപരമായി, മനുഷ്യർ മോളസ്‌കുകളെ ഭക്ഷണമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചു വരുന്നു, ഒപ്പം അതിൻ്റെ പുറന്തോട് പ്രാചീന കാലത്ത് മനുഷ്യർ ആയുധങ്ങൾക്കായുള്ള വസ്തുവായും പണമായും ആഭരണമായും എല്ലാം ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

മലക്കോളജിയുടെ ഒരു വിഭാഗമായ കോൺകോളജി, മോളസ്ക് ഷെല്ലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തിനായി നീക്കിവച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്ത്ര ശാഖയാണ്.

മൊളസ്കുകളുടെ ടാക്സോണമി, പരിസ്ഥിതിശാസ്ത്രം, പരിണാമം എന്നിവ മലക്കോളജിക്കൽ ഗവേഷണത്തിനുള്ളിലെ മേഖലകളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. അപ്ലൈഡ് മലക്കോളജി മെഡിക്കൽ, വെറ്റിനറി, അഗ്രികൾച്ചറൽ ആപ്ലിക്കേഷനുകൾ പഠിക്കുന്നു; ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്, സ്കിസ്റ്റോസോമിയാസിസിലെ പോലെ രോഗവാഹകരായ മോളസ്കുകളെക്കുറിച്ച്.

കാലാവസ്ഥയുടെ പരിണാമം, പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ബയോട്ട, സൈറ്റിന്റെ ഉപയോഗം എന്നിവ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ പുരാവസ്തുശാസ്ത്രം മലക്കോളജി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

1681-ൽ ഫിലിപ്പോ ബോനാനി ആദ്യമായി കടൽ മൊളസ്ക് ഷെല്ലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പുസ്തകം എഴുതി. [2] പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ശീർഷകം: Ricreatione dell' occhio e dela mente nell oservation' delle Chiociolle, proposta a' curiosi delle opere della natura, &c. എന്നാണ്. 1868-ൽ ജർമ്മൻ മലക്കോളജിക്കൽ സൊസൈറ്റി സ്ഥാപിതമായി.

മലക്കോളജിക്കൽ ഗവേഷണത്തിൽ സുവോളജിക്കൽ രീതികൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. മലക്കോളജിക്കൽ ഫീൽഡ് രീതികളും ലബോറട്ടറി രീതികളും (ശേഖരണം, ഡോക്യുമെന്റിംഗ്, ആർക്കൈവിംഗ്, മോളിക്യുലാർ ടെക്നിക്കുകൾ എന്നിവ പോലുള്ളവ) സ്റ്റർമും മറ്റുള്ളവരും സംഗ്രഹിച്ചു. (2006).[3]
