പ്രധാനമായും ഇന്ത്യയിലും ബംഗ്ലാദേശ്ലിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന കടുവകളുടെ ഒരു ഉപവിഭാഗമാണ് ബംഗാൾ കടുവ.^[2] (Panthera tigris tigris or Panthera tigris bengalensis). കൂടാതെ ഇവ നേപ്പാൾ, ഭൂട്ടാൻ, മ്യാന്മാർ എന്നിവടങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും അധികം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന കടുവ ഇനം ഇതാണെന്ന് ഇന്ത്യ സർക്കാറിന്റെ ടൈഗർ കൺസെർവേഷൻ അതോറിറ്റി കണക്കാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവ 1411 ലധികം ഉണ്ടെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ^[3]^[4]^[5] ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ദേശീയമൃഗം ബംഗാൾ കടുവയാണ്.^[6]100 വർഷത്തിനുമുമ്പ് ഒരുലക്ഷത്തോളമെണ്ണമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ബംഗാൾക്കടുവകൾ ഇന്ന് അവശേഷിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത് വെറും രണ്ടായിരത്തോളം മാത്രമാണ്.
