ലോർഡ് ഓഫ് ദ റിങ്സിലെ സംഭവങ്ങൾക്ക് എഴുപത്തേഴ് വർഷം മുൻപാണ് കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്. മിഡിൽ എർത്ത് ആണ് പശ്ചാത്തലം. ടോൾക്കിയൻ എഴുതിയ റിട്ടേൺ ഓഫ് ദി കിംഗ് എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ അനുബന്ധങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് കഥ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത്[6] . ബിൽബോ ബാഗ്ഗിൻസ്, മാന്ത്രികനായ ഗാൻഡാൾഫ്, തോറിൻ ഓക്കെൻഷീൽഡിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഉള്ള പതിമൂന്നു കുള്ളന്മാരുടെ സംഘവും ചേർന്ന് സ്മോഗ് എന്ന ഡ്രാഗണിൽ നിന്ന് ലോൺലി മൗണ്ടൻ തിരിച്ചു പിടിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് ആണ് പ്രമേയം. മാർട്ടിൻ ഫ്രീമാൻ, ഇയാൻ മക്ക്കെല്ലൻ, റിച്ചാർഡ് ആർമിറ്റേജ്, ജെയിംസ് നെസ്ബിറ്റ്, കെൻ സ്റ്റോട്ട്, കേറ്റ് ബ്ലാൻചെറ്റ്, ഇയാൻ ഹോം, ക്രിസ്റ്റഫർ ലീ, ഹ്യൂഗോ വീവിംഗ്, ഏലിജ വുഡ്, ആൻഡി സെർക്കിസ്, സിൽവെസ്റ്റർ മക്കോയ്, ബാരി ഹംഫ്രിസ്, മനു ബെന്നെറ്റ് തുടങ്ങിയ വലിയ താരനിര ഈ ചിത്രത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
