ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കോമൺവെൽത്തിലെ രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് സ്വയംഭരണ അവകാശം നൽകുന്ന പദവിയാണ് ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവി.^[1] ഇതുവഴി ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവികൾ ഉള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് ആഭ്യന്തരമോ ബാഹ്യമോ ആയ ഏത് കാര്യത്തിലും പരസ്പരം ഐക്യപ്പെട്ടും സഹായിച്ചും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വിധേയത്വത്തിൽ നിലനിൽക്കാം. ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവിയുള്ള എല്ലാ രാജ്യവും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന് മുൻപിൽ തുല്യരായിരിക്കും.ഇന്ത്യ പാകിസ്ഥാൻ സൈലോണ് തുടങ്ങിയ രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ഒരു ചെറിയ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവി അലങ്കരിച്ചിരുന്നവരാണ്.

1900 കളിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യസമരത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യധാരയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോണ്ഗ്രസ് പാർട്ടിയുടെ ആവശ്യപ്രകാരമാണ് ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവി ലഭിച്ചത്. 1900കളിലെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യകാല മുഖ്യ ആവശ്യങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്ന് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ഡോമീനിയൻ പദവി.
