മാലി സാമ്രാജ്യം (മണ്ടിംഗ്: Nyeni [5] അഥവാ നിയാനി എന്നും മാൻഡൻ കുർഫബ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു( മാൻഡേൻ എന്ന ചുരുക്കപേരിലും അറിയപ്പെട്ടു) 1230 മുതൽ 1670 വരെ സാമ്രാജ്യം നിലനിന്നു.സുതെയ്ത കെയ്താ ആണ് സാമ്രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. മാണ്ടിംഗ് ഭാഷകളാണ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ സംസാരിച്ചത്. പശ്ചിമാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സാമ്രാജ്യമായിരുന്നു അത്, അതിന്റെ ഭാഷ, നിയമങ്ങൾ ആചാരങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയുടെയുളള വ്യാപനത്തിലൂടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ സംസ്കാരത്തെ വളരെയധികം സ്വാധീനിച്ചു.14-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ വടക്ക് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അറബ് ചരിത്രകാരനായ ഇബ്നു ഖൽദൂൺ, 14-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ മൊറോക്കൻ യാത്രക്കാരനായ ഇബ്നു ബത്തൂത്ത, പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ മൊറോക്കൻ യാത്രക്കാരനായ ലിയോ ആഫ്രിക്കാനസ് എന്നിവരിൽ നിന്നാണ് മാലി സാമ്രാജ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങളുള്ളത്. മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ഉറവിടം മാണ്ടിംഗാ വാമൊഴി പാരമ്പര്യമാണ്, "കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ" എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന കഥപറച്ചിലുകാർ വഴി.

നൈഗർ നദിയുടെ മുകൾഭാഗത്തായുള്ള ഒരു ചെറിയ മണ്ടിങ്ക (mandinka) രാജ്യമായി സാമ്രാജ്യം ആരംഭിച്ചു. നിയാനി പട്ടണത്തെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ നാമധേയമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. 11-ഉം 12-ഉം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ വടക്ക് ഘാന സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പതനത്തിനു ശേഷം ഒരു സാമ്രാജ്യമായി വികസിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ കച്ചവട വഴികൾ തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് സവേനയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റി, ഇത് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ വളർച്ചയെ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിച്ചു. മാലി സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യകാല ചരിത്രം (പതിമൂന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനുമുമ്പ്) അജ്ഞാതമായിരുന്നു. കാരണം അറബികൻ എഴുത്തുകാരും വാമൊഴി പരമ്പരാഗത വാദികളും തമ്മിൽ വൈരുദ്ധ്യവും അപകീർത്തിവുമായ ചരിത്രങ്ങളാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. കൃത്യമായ രേഖാമൂലമുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം(ഇബ്നു ഖൽദൂൻ മുഖേന) ഉള്ള ആദ്യത്തെ ഭരണാധികാരിയാണ് സുതെയ്ത കെയ്താ (1214-c-1255). സുലൈറ്റ കെയ്റ്റ, സോസോ സാമ്രാജ്യ രാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണത്തിൻ കീഴിൽ മാലി ജനങ്ങള മോചിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട കേയ്ത രാജവംശത്തിലെ ഒരു രാജകുമാരനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. 1235ൽ സോസോയിലെ ട്രാൻസ് സഹാറൻ വ്യാപാര  പാതകൾ മാലി സാമ്രാജ്യം പിടിച്ചടക്കി.

സുതെയ്താ കീതയുടെ മരണത്തെ തുടർന്ന് 1255 ൽ മാലി രാജാക്കൻമാരുടെ പേര് മാൻസ എന്നറിയാൻ തുടങ്ങി.സുതയ്തയുടെ  ബന്ധുവായ മൻസ മൂസ മക്കയിലേക്ക് ഹജ്ജ് തീർഥാടനം മാമ്ലുകിലെ സുൽത്താൻ ബായിബാറിന്റെ(1260-1277) കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ആരംഭിച്ചു. മാലിയെ സിംഹസനത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പിടിവലിയുടെ ഒരു പരമ്പരയെ തുടർന്ന്,മുൻ രാജകീയ കോടതിയിലെ അടിമയായിരുന്ന സകൗറ ചക്രവർത്തിയായിത്തീർന്നു. ഏറ്റവും ശക്തരായ ഭരണാധികാരികളിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു സകൗറ, മാലി പ്രവിശ്യകളെ വ്യാപകമായി വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തു. മംലൂക് സുൽത്താൻ അൻ നസീർ മുഹമ്മദ് (1298-1308) കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം മക്കയിൽ തീർത്ഥാടനം നടത്തി. സുതയ്താ കീതയുടെ പിൻഗാമികൾക്ക് ആ സിംഹാസനം തിരികെ ലഭിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. മൂന്നു ചക്രവർത്തിമാരുടെ ഭരണത്തിനു ശേഷം മൂസ 1312ൽ ചക്രവർത്തിയായി. 1324 മുതൽ 1326 വരെ അദ്ദേഹം മക്കയിലേക്ക് തീർത്ഥാടനം നടത്തി. ഈജിപ്റ്റിലെ മാം മല്ലൂക്കിന് വലിയ അളവിൽ സ്വർണ്ണം   സമ്മാനമായി നൽകി. മാലിക്ക് പുറത്തുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തി ഉയർന്നു. 1337-ൽ ഇദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ മകനായ മാഘാൻ ഒന്നാമന്റെ പിൻഗാമിയായി. 1341-ൽ അമ്മാവൻ സുലൈമാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പുറത്താക്കി. സുലൈമാന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് ഇബ്നു ബത്തൂത്ത മാലി സന്ദർശിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തെ തുടർന്ന്, മാലിയിൽ ദുർബലരായ ചക്രവർത്തിമാരും സംഘട്ടനങ്ങളും അസ്ഥിരതയുമുള്ള ഒരു കാലഘട്ടം ആരംഭിച്ചു.
