തീയേസീ എന്ന കുടുംബത്തിലെ സപുഷ്പികളുടെ ഒരു ജനുസ്സാണ് കാമലിയ. ഹിമാലയം, ജപ്പാൻ ഇന്തോനേഷ്യ അതുപോലെ കിഴക്കൻ, തെക്കൻ ഏഷ്യകളിലും ഇവ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. 100-300 സ്പീഷീസസുകൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. കൃത്യമായ എണ്ണത്തിൽ ചില തർക്കങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഏകദേശം 3,000 സങ്കരയിനം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഫിലിപ്പീൻസിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന ജെസ്യൂട്ട് സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ജോർജ്ജ് ജോസഫ് കാമെൽ ഈ ജീനസിന് പേർ നല്കുകയും തുടർന്ന് ലിനേയ്സ് (Linnaeus) കാമലിയയെ കുറിച്ച് വിവരണം നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു.(ജീനസ് ചർച്ച ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ലിന്നേയസ് കാമലിന്റെ അക്കൗണ്ട് പരാമർശിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല)
കാമലിയ കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യ മുഴുവൻ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്; ചൈനീസ് ഭാഷയിൽ ചൗഹൂ ( "ടീ പൂവ്"), ജാപ്പനീസ് ഭാഷയിൽ tsubaki , കൊറിയൻ ഭാഷയിൽ ഡോങ്ബീക്ക്-ക്കോട്ട്, വിയറ്റ്നാമിലെ ഹോവാ ട്രാ അഥവാ ഹോവാ ചെ എന്നാണ് ഇവ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.[1]
