ആധുനിക സാമ്പത്തികശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പിതാവായറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സ്കോട്ടിഷ് തത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ് ആഡം സ്മിത്ത്. വെൽത്ത് ഓഫ് നാഷൻസ് എന്ന ചുരുക്കപ്പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ആൻ ഇൻക്വയറി ഇന്റു ദി നേച്ചർ ആൻഡ് കോസസ് ഒഫ് ദി വെൽത്ത് ഓഫ് നാഷൻസ് എന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രചനയെ സാമ്പത്തികശാസ്ത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ആധുനികകൃതിയായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.

ജീവിതരേഖ [തിരുത്തുക]
സ്കോട്ട്ലാന്റിലെ കിർക്കാഡിയിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ജനനതീയതി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും ജ്ഞാനസ്നാനം ചെയ്യിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് 1723 ജൂൺ 16നാണ്. ജനനത്തിനുമുമ്പേ പിതാവ് മരണപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. മാതാവുമായി ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ വളരെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധം പുലർത്തി. ഗ്ലാസ്ഗോ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ഹച്ച്സണു കീഴിൽ ധാർമ്മിക തത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ പഠനം നടത്തി. തുടർപഠനത്തിനായി ഓക്സ്ഫോർഡിലേക്കു പോയെങ്കിലും അവിടത്തെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ അതൃപ്തനായിരുന്നു. സ്കോളർഷിപ് കാലം തീരും മുമ്പുതന്നെ അവിടെനിന്ന് മടങ്ങി.
1750-ൽ തത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഡേവിഡ് ഹ്യൂമിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. ഹ്യൂം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വളരെയധികം സ്വാധീനിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. അടുത്ത വർഷം ഗ്ലാസ്ഗോ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായി. അവിടത്തെ അദ്ധ്യാപനങ്ങളെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി 1759-ൽ The Theory of Moral Sentiments എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. ധാർമ്മികതയായിരുന്നു വിഷയം. 1763-ൽ ചാൾസ് ടൗൺഷെൻഡിന്റെ പോറ്റുമകനായ ഹെൻറി സ്കോട്ടിനെ പഠിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള ക്ഷണം സ്വീകരിച്ച് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ജോലി രാജിവച്ചു.
സ്കോട്ടിന്റെ കൂടെ യൂറോപ്പ്യൻ പര്യടനം നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു സ്മിത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ ജോലി. ടൂലുവ, ജനീവ, പാരീസ് എന്നീ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി സന്ദർശിച്ചു. ജനീവയിൽ വച്ച് വോൾട്ടയറെ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടു. 1766-ൽ പാരീസിൽ വച്ച് സ്കോട്ടിന്റെ ഇളയ സഹോദരന്റെ മരണത്തോടെ ഈ ജോലിക്ക് അന്ത്യമായി.
കിർക്കാൽഡിയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയ സ്മിത്ത് അടുത്ത പത്തു വർഷം പ്രധാനമായും വെൽത്ത് ഓഫ് നാഷൻസിന്റെ രചനയിലാണ് ചിലവഴിച്ചത്. 1776-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ പുസ്തകം വിൽപനയിൽ വിജയമായിരുന്നു. 1790 ജൂലൈ 17-ന് എഡിൻബറോയിൽ വച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു.
