1914 സെപ്തംബർ 14 -ന് രാത്രിയ്ക്ക് ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ കാൾ വൺ മുള്ളർ നയിച്ച എംഡൻ എന്ന കപ്പൽ രഹസ്യമായി ചെന്നൈ തീരത്തെത്തി. പിന്നീട് മുള്ളർ പറഞ്ഞപ്രകാരം, "ഇന്ത്യക്കാരിൽ ഒരു താല്പര്യമുണ്ടാക്കാനും, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടെ വ്യാപാരങ്ങളെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്താനും ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാരുടെ അഭിമാനത്തെ മുറിപ്പെടുത്താനും" വേണ്ടിയാണ് താൻ ഇതുചെയ്യുന്നതെന്നാണ്. മദ്രാസ് തുറമുഖപ്രദേശത്തെത്തിയ മുള്ളർ ബർമ എണ്ണക്കമ്പനിയുടെ വലിയ ആറ് എണ്ണ ടാങ്കുകൾക്കുനേരേ ഏതാണ്ട് മൂന്നുകിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തുനിന്ന് സേർച്ച്‌ലൈറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചശേഷം ഏതാണ്ട് പത്തുമിനിട്ടോളം വെടിയുതിർത്തു. അതിൽ അഞ്ചു എണ്ണ ടാങ്കുകൾക്കും തീപിടിച്ചു. പതിമൂന്ന് ലക്ഷം ലിറ്ററോളം എണ്ണയാണ് അവിടെ കത്തിനശിച്ചത്. അതിനുശേഷം കപ്പൽ വിജയകരമായി മടങ്ങി.
