ലോകമെമ്പാടുമായി 13 കോടിയോളം ആളുകള് മാതൃഭാഷയായും 60 കോടിയോളം ആളുകള് രണ്ടാംഭാഷയോ മൂന്നാംഭാഷയോ ആയി സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഇന്തോ-യൂറോപ്യന് ഗോത്രത്തില്പ്പെട്ട ഭാഷയാണ് ഫ്രഞ്ച് (français, ഉച്ചാരണം [fʁɑ̃sɛ]) [5]. ഈ ഭാഷ ഉത്ഭവിച്ച ഫ്രാന്സ് കൂടാതെ , കാനഡ, ബെല്ജിയം ,സ്വിറ്റ്സര്ലാന്റ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില് മാതൃഭാഷയായി സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയില് നേരത്തെ ഫ്രഞ്ച് കോളനിയായിരുന്ന പുതുച്ചേരി കേന്ദ്രഭരണപ്രദേശത്തില് ഇന്നും ഔദ്യോഗികഭാഷകളില് ഒന്നായി ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടു്.
