1706-ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ പുകയില ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്യാനായി നിർമ്മിച്ചതാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ തുറമുഖം. ഇന്നു കാണുന്ന നഗരം സ്ഥാപിതമായത് 1729 ജൂലൈ 30-നാണ്. അന്നത്തെ മെരിലാൻ‌ഡ് പ്രൊവിൻസ് പ്രൊപ്രെയ്റ്ററി ഗവർണ്ണർ ആയിരുന്ന ലോർഡ് ബാൾട്ടിമോറിന്റെ നാമധേയത്തിൽ നിന്നാണത്രേ ഈ നഗരത്തിനു ബാൾട്ടിമോർ എന്ന നാമം സിദ്ധിച്ചത്. പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മദ്ധ്യത്തോടെ കരീബിയൻ കോളണികളിൽ ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ കലവറയായി മാറാൻ ബാൾട്ടിമോറിനു കഴിഞ്ഞു. കിഴക്കൻ തീരത്തെ മറ്റു പ്രധാന തുറമുഖങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് കരീബിയൻ കോളണികളോട് അടുത്താണെന്ന ഘടകം ഇതിന്‌ ബാൾട്ടിമോറിനെ സഹായിച്ചു. ബാൾട്ടിമോറിന്റെ തുറമുഖം അതിന്റെ വ്യാവസായിക വാണിജ്യ ഉന്നമനത്തിൽ പ്രധാന പങ്കു വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

അമേരിക്കൻ വിപ്ലവത്തിൽ സുപ്രധാന പങ്കു വഹിച്ച ഒരു നഗരമാണിത്. 1814-ൽ നോർത്ത് പോയിന്റിൽ വെച്ചു നടന്ന യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കര-നാവിക സേനകളെ ആയുധമേന്തിയ ബാൾട്ടിമോർ നിവാ‍സികളും അമേരിക്കൻ പട്ടാളക്കാരും ചേർന്ന് തോൽപ്പിച്ചത് ഒരു സുപ്രധാന സംഭവമായിരുന്നു. രാത്രി മുഴുവൻ നീണ്ടു നിന്ന നാവിക യുദ്ധത്തിനൊടുവിൽ മേജർ ജോർജ് ആർമിസ്റ്റെഡിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലെ ഫോര്ട്ട് മൿ‌ഹെന്രി എന്ന ബാൾട്ടിമോർ തുറമുഖത്തിന്റെ കാവൽ കോട്ട തകർക്കാനാവാതെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് നാവിക സേന തോറ്റു മടങ്ങി. തത്സമയം, കുറച്ചകലെ പടാപ്സ്കോ നദിയിൽ നങ്കൂരമിട്ടിരുന്ന കപ്പലിലിരുന്നു യുദ്ധം വീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്ന ഫ്രാന്സിസ് സ്കോട്ട് കീ കോട്ടയിലുയര്ത്തിയ പടുകൂറ്റന് പതാകയെ വര്ണ്ണിച്ചാണ്‌ ദി സ്റ്റാർ സ്പാങ്ഗിൾഡ് ബാനർ എന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ ദേശീയ ഗാനത്തിന്റെ വരികൾ എഴുതിയതത്രേ. ഈ യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കായി ബാൾട്ടിമോർ നഗരത്തിൽ ഒരു സ്മാരകം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചു. ഈ സ്മാരകമാണ്‌ ബാൾട്ടിമോർ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗികമുദ്രയായി അംഗീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

1904-ൽ ഉണ്ടായ തീപ്പിടുത്തത്തിൽ‍ ബാൾട്ടിമോർ നഗരത്തിന്റെ പകുതിയോളം കത്തി നശിച്ചു. ഇന്നു കാണുന്ന നഗരം അതിനു ശേഷം പുനർ‌നിർമ്മിച്ചെടുത്തതാണ്‌. ഇന്ന് ബാൾട്ടിമോർ നഗരം അമേരിക്കയിലെ ആറാമത്തെ വലിയ നഗരമാണ്. പ്രധാനമായും ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അമേരിക്കൻ വംശജരടങ്ങിയ ജനതയാണ്‌ ബാൾട്ടിമോറിന്റേത്


തീരപ്രദേശം

ബാൾട്ടിമോറിന്റെ തീരപ്രദേശമടങ്ങുന്ന ചെസപീക് ഉൾക്കടൽ അതിന്റെ ജൈവവൈവിധ്യത്താൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്‌. നീല ഞണ്ടുകളുടെ പ്രധാന ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയിലൊന്നാണ്‌ ഇവിടം[11][12]. ബാൾട്ടിമോറിലെ ഭക്ഷണശാലകളിലെ പ്രധാനവിഭവങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്‌ ഈ ഞണ്ടുപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള ക്രാബ് കെയ്ക്ക്[13]. ഈ ഞണ്ടുകളുടെ അമിതമായ ഉപയോഗത്താൽ എണ്ണം കുറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നതിനെതിരായുള്ള[14] ബോധവൽക്കരണത്തിനായി നീല ഞണ്ടുകളെ ചെസപീക് ഉൾക്കടലിന്റെ സ്വത്താണെന്നു പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയും, പല തരത്തിലുള്ള ഞണ്ടുകളുടെ രൂപങ്ങൾ നഗരത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ആകർണമായ ഇന്നർ ഹാർബർ പരിസരത്തു സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും, പലവിധത്തിലുള്ള സം‌രക്ഷണപദ്ധതികൾ ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്[15].
