നുനാവട് കാനഡയുടെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയതും, വലുതും ഏറ്റവും വടക്കുള്ളതുമായ പ്രവിശ്യയാണ്. 1999 ഏപ്രിൽ 1-ന് നുനാവുട് ആക്റ്റ്,[9] നുനാവട് ലാന്റ് ക്ലെയിംസ് എഗ്രീമെന്റ് ആക്ട്[10] എന്നിവയനുസരിച്ച് വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ പ്രവിശ്യകളിൽനിന്നു ഔദ്യോഗികമായി വേർപെടുത്തിയെങ്കിലും 1993 ൽത്തന്നെ ഇതിന്റെ അതിർത്തികൾ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. 1949 ൽ ന്യൂഫൗണ്ട്ലാൻഡ് പ്രവിശ്യയുടെ ഏകീകരണത്തിനുശേഷമുള്ള കാനഡയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ഭൂപടത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രധാന മാറ്റത്തിനു നാന്ദികുറിച്ചത് നുനാവാട് പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ സൃഷ്ടിയോടെയാണ്.
വടക്കൻ കാനഡയുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ഭാഗവും കനേഡിയൻ ആർട്ടിക് ദ്വീപസമൂഹങ്ങളുടെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും നുനാവട് പ്രദേശത്തിലുൾപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ലോകത്തിലെ അഞ്ചാമത്തെ വലിയ രാജ്യ ഉപവിഭാഗവും അതുപോലെതന്നെ വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിൽ രണ്ടാമത്തേതുമാണ് (ഗ്രീൻലാന്ഡിനു ശേഷം). കിഴക്ക് ബാഫിൻ ദ്വീപിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന തലസ്ഥാനമായ ഇക്വാല്യൂട്ട് (മുൻപ് "ഫ്രോബിഷർ ബേ") 1995 ലെ തലസ്ഥാന ജനഹിതപരിശോധന പ്രകാരമാണ് തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. ഇവിടുത്തെ മറ്റു പ്രധാന സമൂഹങ്ങളിൽ റാങ്കിൻ ഇൻലെറ്റ്, കേംബ്രിഡ്ജ് ബേ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രാദേശിക കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
നുനവാട് പ്രവിശ്യയിൽ ദൂരെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള എല്ലെസ്മിയർ ദ്വീപ് ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നതോടൊപ്പം വിക്ടോറിയ ദ്വീപിന്റെ കിഴക്ക്, തെക്കു ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഇതിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറു ഭാഗത്തും പ്രവിശ്യയുടെ മറ്റുഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ദിശയിൽ അനദിവിദൂരത്തിലായിക്കിടക്കുന്ന ജയിംസ് ഉൾക്കടലിലെ അക്കിമിസ്കി ദ്വീപും ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയുടെ മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളുമായി ഹൈവേ വഴി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാത്ത കാനഡയിലെ ഒരേയൊരു പ്രദേശമാണിത്.[11]
കാനഡയിലെ പ്രവിശ്യകളിലും പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുംവച്ച് ഏറ്റവും കുറവു ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള രണ്ടാമത്തെ പ്രദേശമെന്നതുപോലെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ഭൂതല വിസ്തീർണ്ണവുമുള്ള പ്രദേശവുമാണിത്. ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വിദൂരത്തിലുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നും വിരളമായ അധിവാസ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളുമുള്ള ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ 35,944 ആണ്. ഇവർ ഇന്യൂട്ട് വംശജരും ഏതാണ്ട് 1,750,000 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (680,000 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ), അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മെക്സിക്കോയേക്കാളും ഒരൽപം ചെറുതുമായ ഒരു പ്രദേശത്ത് ചിതറിക്കിടക്കുന്നവരാണ്. ലോകത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വടക്കേ അറ്റത്തുള്ള, സ്ഥിരവാസ കേന്ദ്രമായ അലെർട്ട് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതിവിടെയാണ്.[12] എല്ലെസ്മിയർ ദ്വീപിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന യുറേക്ക എന്ന കാലാവസ്ഥാ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലാണ് കാനഡയിലെ മറ്റു കാലാവസ്ഥാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളേക്കാൾ ഏറ്റവും കുറഞ്ഞ ശരാശരി വാർഷിക താപനില രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.[13]

തദ്ദേശീയ ഇനുക്ടിയൂട്ട് ഭാഷയിൽ നുനാവുത് എന്നാൽ "നമ്മുടെ ഭൂമി" എന്നാണ്.[14]
ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം[തിരുത്തുക]
വടക്കൻ കാനഡയിൽ 1,877,787 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (725,018 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ) ഭൂമിയും 160,930 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (62,137 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ) ജലപ്രദേശവും നുനാവത്ത് ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു. പ്രധാന ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം, ആർട്ടിക് ദ്വീപസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും, ബെൽ‌ച്ചർ ദ്വീപുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഹഡ്‌സൺ ബേ, ജെയിംസ് ബേ, ഉങ്കാവ ബേ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ മുഴുവൻ ദ്വീപുകളും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന നുനാവടിലെ ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങളെല്ലാം നുനാവട് വേർതിരിക്കപ്പെട്ട വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളുടേതാണ്. ഇത് ലോകത്തിലെ അഞ്ചാമത്തെ വലിയ സബ് നാഷണൽ എന്റിറ്റിയായി (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റീവ് ഡിവിഷൻ) മാറുന്നു. നുനാവട് ഒരു രാജ്യമായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, അത് വിസ്തൃതിയിൽ 15 ആം സ്ഥാനത്താകുമായിരുന്നു.[15]
