1871-നും 1872-നും ഇടയിൽ ഗുസ്താവ് കൂർബെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ച സ്റ്റിൽ ലൈഫ് ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ ശ്രേണിയിലെ ഒരു ചിത്രമാണ് സ്റ്റിൽ-ലൈഫ് വിത്ത് ഫ്രൂട്ട് (French - Nature morte aux fruits) പാരിസ് കമ്യൂണിലെ ഫ്രാങ്കോ-പ്രഷ്യൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ നേരിടേണ്ടിവന്ന തടവുകാലത്തിനെയും രോഗത്തിനെയും തുടർന്ന് ജീവിതത്തിൽ നേരിട്ട നിശ്ശബ്ദത അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചിത്രരചനയിലേയ്ക്കു മടങ്ങിവരാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഫ്രഞ്ച് പെയിന്റിംഗിൽ റിയലിസം പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയ ഒരു ഫ്രഞ്ച് ചിത്രകാരനായിരുന്നു ഗുസ്താവ് കൂർബെ. തനിക്കു കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ മാത്രം വരയ്ക്കാൻ പ്രതിജ്ഞാബദ്ധനായ അദ്ദേഹം അക്കാദമിക് കൺവെൻഷനും മുൻ തലമുറയിലെ വിഷ്വൽ ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റുകളുടെ റൊമാന്റിസിസവും നിരസിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം പിൽക്കാല കലാകാരന്മാരായ ഇംപ്രഷനിസ്റ്റുകൾക്കും ക്യൂബിസ്റ്റുകൾക്കും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു മാതൃകയാണ്. പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഫ്രഞ്ച് പെയിന്റിംഗിൽ ഒരു നവീനനെന്ന നിലയിലും തന്റെ സൃഷ്ടികളിലൂടെ ധീരമായ സാമൂഹിക പ്രസ്താവനകൾ നടത്താൻ തയ്യാറായ ഒരു കലാകാരനെന്ന നിലയിലും കോർബെറ്റിന് ഒരു പ്രധാന സ്ഥാനം ഉണ്ട്.
