മിൽവൌക്കീ (/mɪlˈwɔːkiː/, /ˈmwɔːki/) ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ വിസ്കോസിൻ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പട്ടണവും മദ്ധ്യ-പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ യു.എസിലെ അഞ്ചാമത്തെ വലിയ പട്ടണവുമാണ്. ഇത് മിൽവൌക്കീ കൌണ്ടിയുടെ കൌണ്ടി സീറ്റുകൂടിയായ ഈ പട്ടണം മിഷിഗൺ തടാകത്തിൻറെ പടിഞ്ഞാറേ കരയിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. മിൽവൌക്കീ പട്ടണത്തിൽ 2015 ലെ കണക്കുകളനുസരിച്ച് 600,155 ജനങ്ങൾ അധിവസിക്കുന്നു.[1] മിൽവൌക്കീ-റാസിനെ-വൌക്കേഷ മെട്രോപോളിറ്റൻ മേഖലയുടെ പ്രധാന സാസ്കാരിക സാമ്പത്തിക കേന്ദ്രമാണ് ഈ പട്ടണം. ഈ മേട്രോപോളിറ്റൻ മേഖലിയിലെ ആകെ ജനസംഖ്യ 2015 ലെ കണക്കുകൾ പ്രകാരം ഏകദേശം 2,046,692 ആണ്.[2] ജനസംഖ്യയനുസരിച്ച് മിൽവൌക്കി പട്ടണം ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ 31 ആമത്തെ വലിയ പട്ടണമാണ്.[3]
ഈ പ്രദേശത്തു കൂടി ആദ്യമായി കടന്നുപോയ യൂറോപ്യന്മാർ, ഫ്രഞ്ച് കത്തോലിക്കാ മിഷണറിമാരും രോമ വ്യവസായികളുമായിരുന്നു. 1818 ൽ ഫ്രഞ്ച്-കനേഡിയൻ പര്യവേക്ഷകൻ സോളമൻ ജൂന്യൂ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തു തമ്പടിച്ചു. 1846 ൽ ജുന്യൂ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ചെറു പട്ടണം സമീപത്തെ രണ്ടു പട്ടണങ്ങളുമായി സംയോജിപ്പിച്ച് മിൽവൌക്കീ പട്ടണം സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1840 കളിൽ വളരെയധികം ജർമ്മൻ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാർ ഈ മേഖലയിലെത്തിച്ചേർന്നതോടെ പട്ടണത്തിലെ ജനസംഖ്യ ഗണ്യമായി ഉയർന്നു. പിന്നീടുള്ള ദശകങ്ങളിൽ പോളീഷുകാരും മറ്റു യൂറോപ്യൻ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരും വ്യാപകമായി ഈ പ്രദേശത്തേയ്ക്കു കുടിയേറി.

[തിരുത്തുക]മിൽവൌക്കീ മേഖലയിലെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ആദ്യനിവാസികൾ മെനോമിനീ, ഫോക്സ്, മസ്കൌട്ടെൻ, സൌക്, പൊട്ടവട്ടോമി, ഒജിബ്വേ (എല്ലാവരും അൽജിക്/അൽഗോങ്കിയൻ ജനങ്ങൾ), ഹോ-ചുങ്ക് (വിന്നെബാഗൊ - ഒരു വിഭാഗം സിയൌൺ ജനങ്ങൾ), എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലുള്ള തദ്ദേശീയ ഇന്ത്യൻ വർഗ്ഗങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. മിൽവൌക്കീ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്ക് അധിവാസം നടത്തുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ്, ഗ്രീൻ ബേയ്ക്കു ചുറ്റുപാടുമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു ഇവരിൽ ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷവും യൂറോപ്യൻ അധിനിവേശകാലത്ത് വസിച്ചിരുന്നത്.[4]
