ആഫ്രിക്കൻ തീരത്തുള്ള മഡഗാസ്കർ ദ്വീപിൽ മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരിനം ജീവിയാണ് അയ്-അയ്. (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: aye-aye), (ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Daubentonia madagascariensis) മഡഗാസ്കറിൽ ഈ ജീവികളെപ്പറ്റി അനവധി അന്ധവിശ്വാസങ്ങൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇവയെ മമേലിയ ക്ലാസിൽ പ്രമേറ്റ്സ് ഓർഡറിൽ ഡൗബൻറ്റോണിഡെ എന്ന കുടുംബത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. മഴക്കാടുകളാണ് ഇവയുടെ ആവാസകേന്ദ്രം.

വിവരണം

രണ്ടര കിലോഗ്രാം വരെ ശരീരഭാരം വയ്ക്കുന്ന ഇവയ്ക്ക് ഏകദേശം 35 സെന്റീമീറ്റർ വരെ നീളമുണ്ടാകും. ഇവയുടെ മുൻകാലുകളിൽ നീളമേറിയ ഒരോ വിരലുകൾ വീതം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ വിരലിലെ കൂർത്ത നഖമുപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ഇവ ഇര പിടിക്കുന്നത്. പുഴുക്കളാണ് ഇവയുടെ ഇഷ്ടഭക്ഷണം. വിരലുപയോഗിച്ച് മരത്തിന്റെയും മറ്റും പോടുകളിൽ നിന്നും ഇവ ഇര പിടിക്കുന്നു. വിത്തുകൾ, പഴങ്ങൾ, പൂന്തേൻ എന്നിവയും അയ്-അയ് ഭക്ഷണമാക്കാറുണ്ട്. രാത്രികാലങ്ങളിൽ ഇര തേടുന്ന ഇവ പകൽ സമയം വിശ്രമിക്കുകയാണ് പതിവ്.

ശാരീരിക പ്രത്യേകതകൾ

ഇവയുടെ ശരീരത്തിൽ കരടിയുടേതിനു സമാനമായ രോമം, എലിയുടേതു പോലുള്ള മൂക്ക്, വവ്വാലിന്റേതിനു സമാനമായ ചെവികൾ, റോഡന്റ് വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ജീവികളുടേതിനു തുല്യമായ പല്ലുകൾ, മൂങ്ങയുടെ കണ്ണുകൾ പോലെ തിളക്കമുള്ള കണ്ണുകൾ എന്നിവ ഇവയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്.

വംശനാശം

കൃഷികളും മറ്റും ഇവ തിന്നു നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ മനുഷ്യർ ഇവയെ ധാരാളമായി കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയിരുന്നു. ഇവയെ ഐ.യു.സി.എൻ. റെഡ് ലിസ്റ്റിൽ മുൻനിരയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു^[4]. മഴക്കാടുകളുടെ നാശവും ഇവയുടെ വംശനാശത്തിനു കാരണമായി.
