തമിഴ് ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ജനങ്ങളെ തമിഴർ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലാണ് ഇവരിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും. 3000 വർഷത്തോളം പഴക്കമുള്ള ചരിത്രത്തിനു ഉടമകളാണിവർ. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിൽ കുടിയേറുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ് സിന്ധുനദീതടങ്ങളിലും പോളിനേഷ്യയിലുമായിരുന്നു ഇവരുടെ പൂർവികർ. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ മാത്രമല്ല തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്; സിംഗപ്പൂർ, മലേഷ്യ, ശ്രീലങ്ക തുടങ്ങിയ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
തമിഴ് മാതൃഭാഷയായുള്ളയാളെ തമിഴൻ എന്നും ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥം അണ്ണാച്ചി എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
