പുതുതായി സ്ഥാപിതമായ അറബ് രാജ്യമായ സിറിയയിലെ ഹാഷെമൈറ്റുകളും ഫ്രാൻസും തമ്മിൽ 1920-ൽ നടന്ന ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലാണ് ഫ്രാങ്കോ-സിറിയൻ യുദ്ധം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്^[7]^[8]. ഏതാനും ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലുകൾക്കൊടുവിൽ മൈസലൂൺ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഫ്രെഞ്ച് സൈന്യം സിറിയയിലെ ഫൈസൽ രാജാവിനെ പരാായപ്പെടുത്തുകയും 24 ജൂലൈ 1920-ന് ദമാസ്കസ് കീഴടക്കുകയുമായിരുന്നു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം തന്നെ അലാവുദ്ദീൻ അൽ ദാറുബിയുടെ കീഴിൽ ഒരു പാവ സർക്കാരിനെ ഫ്രാൻസ് നിയോഗിച്ചു.^[9]

ഒടുവിൽ സിറിയയെയും ലെബനാനെയും ഫ്രെഞ്ച് മാൻഡേറ്റ് പ്രകാരം നിരവധി വിധേയരാജ്യങ്ങളായി വിഭജിച്ചു. ഇതോടെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ ഇറാഖിലെ രാജാവായി സിറിയയിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ട ഫൈസൽ രാജാവിനെ വാഴിച്ചു.
