ആദ്യമായി ആഫ്രിക്കയ്ക്കു കുറുകെ കടന്ന സാഹസികനാണ് ഡേവിഡ് ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റൺ. സ്കോട്ട്ലന്റിലെ ഗ്ലാസ്ഗോ നഗരത്തിലാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. 1841-ൽ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെത്തിയ ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റൺ അന്നേവരെ ഒരു യൂറോപ്യനും കടന്നുചെല്ലാത്ത മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ച് ആഫ്രിക്കയുടെ ഉൾഭാഗങ്ങളിലെത്തിച്ചേർന്നു. 1855-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തിയ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടത്തിനു വിക്ടോറിയ എന്നു നാമം നൽകി. ഉൾനാടുകളിലേക്കു അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയ യാത്രകളാണ് ആഫ്രിക്കയിലേക്കു യൂറോപ്യന്മാരെ ആകർഷിച്ചത്.
1841-ൽ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെത്തിയ ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റണെക്കുറിച്ച് വളരെക്കാലം വിവരങ്ങളൊന്നും ലഭിക്കാതിരുന്നതിനാൽ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് ഹെറാൾഡ് പത്രം 1869-ൽ ലേഖകനായ ഹെൻട്രി മോർട്ടൺ സ്റ്റാൻലിയെ അന്വേഷണത്തിനായി നിയമിച്ചു. ഏതാണ്ട് രണ്ടുവർഷത്തെ അന്വേഷണത്തിനൊടുവിൽ 1871 നവംബർ 10-ന് ടാൻസാനിയയിലെ ടാങ്കനിക്ക തടാകക്കരയിൽ നിന്നും രോഗിയായ ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റനെ കണ്ടെത്തി[1]. താങ്കൾ തന്നെയാണ് ഡോ. ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റൺ എന്നു കരുതട്ടെ? ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume?") എന്ന സ്റ്റാൻലിയുടെ ചോദ്യം ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്[2].
1872 മാർച്ച് വരെ സ്റ്റാൻലി ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റണൊപ്പം കഴിഞ്ഞു. 1873 മേയ് 1-ന് സാംബിയയിൽ വച്ച് മലേറിയ ബാധിച്ച് ലിവിങ്സ്റ്റൺ മരണമടഞ്ഞു[3].
