മദ്ധ്യേഷ്യയിലെ മുഖ്യ നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്‌ അമു ദര്യ. ഏദൻതോട്ടത്തിലെ നാല്‌ നദികളിലൊന്നായ ഗൈഹോണിനെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ജയ്ഹോൺ എന്നാണ് ഈ നദി നാട്ടുകാരുടെ ഇടയിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. അലക്സാണ്ടറുടെ ആക്രമണകാലം മുതലേ പാശ്ചാത്യർ ഇതിന്റെ ഓക്സസ് എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഭാരതീയപുരാണങ്ങളിൽ ജംബുദ്വീപത്തിന്റെ വടക്കേ അതിരായ വക്ഷു[൧] ഈ നദിയാണ്.[2]

മൊത്തം 2400 കിലോമീറ്റർ നീളമുള്ള അമു ദര്യയുടെ 1450 കി.മീ. സഞ്ചാരയോഗ്യമാണ്. പ്രതിവർഷം 55 ഘനകിലോമീറ്റർ ജലം ഈ നദിയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്നു. പാമീർ പർവതനിരയിൽനിന്നുത്ഭവിച്ച് ആറൽ കടലിൽ പതിക്കുന്ന ഈ നദി, തുർക്ക്മെനിസ്താൻ, ഉസ്ബക്കിസ്താൻ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്നു. 5,34,739 ച.കി.മീ വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള നദിയുടെ നീർത്തടം‍, അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താൻ, താജിക്കിസ്താൻ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളലായി പരന്നുകിടക്കുന്നു. സോർക്കുൽ തടാകത്തിൽ നിന്നുത്ഭവിക്കുന്ന പാമീർ നദിയാണ് അമു ദര്യയയുടെ പ്രഭവങ്ങളിലൊന്ന്. പാമീർ പർവതനിരകളിലെതന്നെ വഖാൻ ഇടനാഴിയിലുള്ള വാഘ്ജിർ താഴ്വരയിലെ ഹിമാനികളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇതിൻറെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രഭവം.

പതിനഞ്ചാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ, പേർഷ്യൻഭാഷികളുടേയും തുർക്കി ഭാഷികളുടേയും അതിർവരമ്പായിരുന്നു അമു ദര്യ നദി. അമു ദര്യ തടത്തിലെ ഇന്നത്തെ സ്ഥിതി വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ തുർക്കി അവിടത്തെ പൊതുഭാഷയാണ്.[3]
