തുമ്പികളിൽ ശക്തരായ തുമ്പികളുടെ വിഭാഗമാണ് കല്ലൻ തുമ്പികൾ (അനിസോപ്റ്ററ) - (Anisoptera) - Dragon flies. ഇരിക്കുമ്പോൾ നിവർത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുന്ന ചിറകുകളും ശക്തമായ ശരീരവുമാണ് ഇവയുടെ പ്രത്യേകത. ഈ തുമ്പികളെ ചിറകുകളിൽ പിടിച്ച് ചെറിയ കല്ലുകളെടുപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പഴയകാലത്ത് കുട്ടികളുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വിനോദമായിരുന്നു. അതിനാലാകണം ഈ തുമ്പിയെ കല്ലൻ തുമ്പി എന്ന് കേരളത്തിൽ വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ആഗോളമായി 5680 വിത്യസ്തഇനങ്ങൾ ഇതുവരെയായി കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്[1].
