ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിൽ പതിനൊന്ന് ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകൾ ഉണ്ട്: ആഫ്രികാൻസ്, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, ന്ദെബേലെ, വടക്കൻ സോത്തൊ, സോത്തൊ, സ്വാസി, സോൻഗ, ത്സ്വാന, വെന്ദ, കൗസ, സുലു എന്നിവയാണവ. മാതൃഭാഷ ഔദ്യോഗികഭാഷയല്ലാത്ത ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ജനവിഭാഗം, മൊത്തം ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ 2%ത്തിലും കുറവ് മാത്രമാണ്.[1] ഏറെക്കുറെ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കക്കാർക്കും ഒന്നിലധികം ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കാൻ കഴിവുണ്ട്. 1910 മുതൽ 1925 വരെയുള്ള കാലയളവിൽ, ഡച്ചും ഇംഗ്ലീഷുമായിരുന്നു ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകൾ. 1925-ലെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷാ നിയമ പ്രകാരം ആഫ്രികാൻസ് ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി. ക്രമേണ ഡച്ച് ഭാഷയ്ക്ക് ബദലായി ആഫ്രികാൻസ് വളർന്നുവന്നു.[2] 1984-ൽ ഡച്ചിന് ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷാ പദവി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. 1984 മുതൽ 1994 വരെയുള്ള, വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയ്ക്ക് രണ്ട് ഔദ്യോഗികഭാഷകൾ മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. ഇംഗ്ലീഷും ആഫ്രികാൻസും.[3]

1994- പൊതുതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനെ തുടർന്ന അധികാരത്തിലെത്തിയ എ.എൻ.സി സർക്കാർ, ഇംഗീഷ് ഭാഷയെ ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഭാഷയായി പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കാൻ മുൻകൈ എടുത്തു. ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളെ ഭാഷാകുടുംബം അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി കണക്കാക്കിയാൽ, ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളിൽ രണ്ടെണ്ണം വെസ്റ്റ് ജെർമ്മാനിൿ ഭാഷകളാണ് (English and Afrikaans) ബാക്കി ഒൻപത് സതേൺ ബാന്ധു ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെടുന്നവയാണ്.
