ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്ന് നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സൂര്യന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും തിളക്കമുള്ളതായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന നക്ഷത്രമാണ്‌ സിറിയസ്. ഇതിന്റെ പ്രകാശമാനം -1.47 ആണ്. ഇത് അടുത്ത തിളക്കമുള്ള നക്ഷത്രമായ കനോപ്പസിനെക്കാള്‍ ഇരട്ടിയാണ്‌. നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഒറ്റ നക്ഷത്രമായി തോന്നാമെങ്കിലും യഥാര്‍ത്തില്‍ ഇത് ഇരട്ട നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളാണ്‌ മുഖ്യശ്രേണിയില്‍പ്പെട്ട സ്പെട്രല്‍ ടൈപ്പ് A1V നക്ഷത്രമായ സിറിയസ് A യും സ്പെട്രല്‍ ടൈപ്പ് DA2 വും വെള്ളകുള്ളന്‍ നക്ഷത്രവുമായ സിറിയസ് B യും.

സിറിയസ് ഇത്രയും തിളക്കമുള്ളതായി കാണപ്പെടാന്‍ ഒരു കാരണം താരതമ്യേന സൂര്യനുമായുള്ള ദൂരക്കുറവാണ്‌. ഏകദേശം 8.6 പ്രകാശ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളാണ്‌ (2.6 പര്‍സെക്ക്) അവയിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം. നമ്മുടെ സൗരയൂഥത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത അയല്‍കാരില്‍പ്പെട്ടവയാണ്‌‌ ഇവ. സിറിയസ് A യ്ക്ക് സൂര്യനേക്കാള്‍ ഇരട്ടി ഭാരവും 25 മടങ്ങ് പ്രകാശ തീവ്രതയുമുണ്ട്. കൂടുതല്‍ ഭാരമുള്ളത് സിറിയസ് B യ്ക്ക് ആണെങ്കിലും 12 കോടി വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുന്‍പ് ഉര്‍ജോല്പാദനം നിലയ്ക്കുകയും ചുവന്ന ഭീമന്‍ നക്ഷത്രമായതിന് ശേഷം ഇന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയിലുള്ള വെള്ളകുള്ളന്‍ നക്ഷത്രമായി തീരുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്ന് അനുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
