സിംഹവർഗത്തിലെ ഒരു ഉപവർഗ്ഗമാണ് ഏഷ്യൻ സിംഹം. Panthera leo persica എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമത്തിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവ വംശനാശത്തിന്റെ വക്കിലാണ്[1] ഏഷ്യാറ്റിക് സിംഹം, പേർഷ്യൻ സിംഹം, ഇന്ത്യൻ സിംഹം എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഈ ഉപകുടുംബം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ടർക്കി മുതൽ ഇന്ത്യ വരെ കാണപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ വലിയ പ്രൈഡുകളും പകൽസമയത്തുള്ള ഇരതേടലും ഇവയെ വേട്ടക്കാർക്ക് എളുപ്പത്തിൽ കൊല്ലാൻ പറ്റുന്ന മൃഗങ്ങളാക്കി മാറ്റി. 2017-ലെ കണക്കെടുപ്പ് പ്രകാരം ഗുജറാത്ത് സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഗിർ വനത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്ന ഏകദേശം 650 എണ്ണം സിംഹങ്ങൾ മാത്രമാണ് ഈ ഉപവർഗ്ഗത്തിലുള്ളത്[3].
ശരീരപ്രകൃതി
[തിരുത്തുക]ഏഷ്യൻ സിംഹങ്ങൾ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ സിംഹങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് അല്പം ചെറുതാണ്. ശരാശരി ആൺസിംഹത്തിന്റെ ശരീരഭാരം 175 കിലോയും പെണ്ണിന്റേത് 115 കിലോയുമാണ്. ആഫ്രിക്കൻ സിംഹങ്ങളെക്കാൾ ചെറിയ സട ഇവയുടെ പ്രേത്യേകതയാണ്. ഇവയുടെ വയറിന്റെ അടി ഭാഗം അല്പം പരന്നതാണ്.[4].
