പഞ്ചാബിൽ ജനിയ്ക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് പാകിസ്താനിലേയ്ക്ക് കുടിയേറുകയും ചെയ്ത ചെറുകഥാകൃത്തും, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തുമായിരുന്നു സാദത്ത് ഹസ്സൻ മന്തോ.(ജ:മെയ് 11, 1912 – ജനു:18, 1955).ഉറുദുവിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മിക്കകൃതികളും പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയത്. റേഡിയോ നാടകങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹം രചിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിഭജനവും അതിനെത്തുടർന്നുണ്ടായ സംഭവപരിണാമങ്ങളുമാണ് മന്തോ തന്റെ ചില രചനകൾക്ക് ആധാരമാക്കിയത്. 22 ചെറുകഥാ സമാഹാരങ്ങളും ഒരു നോവലും,അഞ്ചു റേഡിയോ നാടക സംഗ്രഹങ്ങളും,ആത്മകഥാംശമുള്ള രചനകളുടെ രണ്ടുവാല്യങ്ങളും, അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ സാഹിത്യസപര്യയിൽ പൂർത്തിയാക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

സാദത്ത് ഹസ്സൻ മന്തോയുടെ തുടക്കം ചില വിശ്വവിഖ്യാതകൃതികൾ ഉറുദുവിലേയ്ക്ക് ഭാഷാന്തരം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു.ചെക്കോവ്, ഗോർക്കി,ഓസ്കാർ വൈൽഡ്,വിക്തോർ യൂഗോ എന്നിവരുടെ കൃതികളാണ് അക്കാലത്ത് പ്രധാനമായും അദ്ദേഹം തർജ്ജിമ ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്. ആദ്യത്തെ ചെറുകഥ ജാലിയൻ വാലാബാഗ് സംഭവത്തെ അധികരിച്ച് എഴുതിയ 'തമാശ'(Tamasha) എന്ന കൃതിയായിരുന്നു. രചനകളിൽ ലൈംഗിക അതിപ്രസരത്തെച്ചൊല്ലി മന്തോയ്ക്ക് 6 പ്രാവശ്യം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്തും, പാകിസ്താനിലും വിചാരണ നേരിടേണ്ടിവന്നിരുന്നെങ്കിലും കുറ്റവിമുക്തനാക്കപ്പെടുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. "ബു" (Odour), "ഖോൽ ദോ" (Open It), "ഥംണ്ടാ ഗോഷ്ത്" (Cold Meat), and "തോബാ തേക് സിങ്" എന്നീ കൃതികൾ ഏറെ ജനശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റി.
