കാറ്റിന്റെ വേഗം അളക്കുന്ന ഒരളവാണ് ബ്യൂഫോർട്ട് സ്കെയിൽ (The Beaufort Scale). പ്രധാനമായും സമുദ്രത്തിലെ കാറ്റിന്റെ വേഗമറിയുന്നതിനും അളക്കുന്നതിനുമാണ് ഇത് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് നേവൽ ഓഫീസർ റിയർ-അഡ്മിറൽ സർ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ബ്യൂഫോർട്ട് എ.ഡി.1806 ൽ ആണ് ഈ സ്കെയിൽ കണ്ടു പിടിച്ചത്. അതുവരെ നാവിക ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർക്ക് കാറ്റിന്റെ വേഗതയോ ശക്തിയോ അളക്കുന്നതിനും മറ്റും കൃത്യമായ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അതിനൊരു പരിഹാരമായാണ് ബ്യൂഫോർട്ട് സ്കെയിൽ കണ്ടുപിടിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.
