Parameters
[തിരുത്തുക]A full list of the parameters available can be found at Template:Geobox/legend#Fields.
Purpose
[തിരുത്തുക]These geoboxes were created:
- To provide a means for creating consistently-formatted tables and summarizing information
- To improve navigation between articles within closely-related subjects
- To maximize the ease of creating and upgrading infoboxes
- To improve the ease of transferring information to other language Wikipedias by using standardized, database-like fields
Features
[തിരുത്തുക]- no need to format the input data in any way; it is handled by the template
- automated locator dot placement on maps, based on coordinates or X/Y values
- automated unit conversion from metric to imperial or reverse
- automated wikilinking
- additional fields
- background maps
- foldable list on all multiple fields
- international categories, (e.g., World Heritage Site), eliminating the need for a second infobox on the same page

Other guidelines
[തിരുത്തുക]This general, multi-purpose geobox template duplicates features contained in various other, more specific geography and place infobox templates (like {{Infobox settlement}} for settlements, and {{Infobox protected area}} for protected areas. In general, editors should not change from one to the other without good reason or broad consensus.
Exceptions where broad consensus has been achieved are:
- The use of this template for mountains is not supported. The relevant code has been removed. Use {{Infobox mountain}} instead.
- The use of this template for mountain ranges is not supported. The relevant code has been removed. Use {{Infobox mountain range}} instead.
- The use of this template for provinces is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead. The former provinces instances have been replaced.
- The use of this template for boroughs is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead. The former borough instances have been replaced.
- The use of this template for townships is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead. The former township instances have been replaced.
- The use of this template for settlement is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead.
The last major merge/deletion discussion of this template was held in January 2012, which resulted in no consensus.
