പരുന്ത് , അസിപ്രിഡേ എന്ന കുടുബത്തിൽ പ്പെടുന്ന പക്ഷിപിടിയൻ പക്ഷികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ഏകദേശം 60ൽ പരം പക്ഷികൾ ഈ വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ ഉണ്ട്. ഇവയെ ലോകത്തിന്റെ മിക്കയിടങ്ങളിലും കണ്ടുവരുന്നു. പല രാജ്യങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ ദേശീയ ചിഹ്നത്തിൽ പരുന്തോ പരുന്തിന്റെ എതെങ്കിലും ഭാഗമോ ഉപയോഗിക്കറുണ്ട്. പരുന്തിനെ ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു മൃഗങ്ങളില്ലാത്തതിനാൽ ഭക്ഷ്യശൃംഖലയുടെ ഏറ്റവും മുകളിലാണ് ഇവയുടെ സ്ഥാനം.
