Clove beans[തിരുത്തുക]
Clove bean is a crop can be grown throughout the year hence it is called 'nithya vazhuthana' (നിത്യ വഴുതന) in malayalam. It is a vine plant with small bunches of fruits. Tender fruits are used for cooking. The fruit are with long pedicels and swollen tips like bulb. This vegetable was popular until few years ago. New generation is not really familiar with this vegetable.

Malayalam name:- nithya vazhuthina(നിത്യ വഴുതന)
Clove beans is a very common vegetable in Kerala. We can cultivate it very easily and it does not require any special care. we can make tasty fries and dishes with it. The another highlight of this plant is it is free from the attacks of insects or pests. This is a very simple vegetable and anybody can start the farming of ipomoea muricata aka clove bean / nithya vazhutha without any difficulties. Once you plant this it will naturally reborn again and will give the result. Clove bean are all season crop which does not require specific method for cultivation. The seeds @ 6-7 kg/ha are planted at a spacing of 1.0 x 0.6 m. There is no serious pest or disease incidence in the crop. Average yield is 5-6 t/ha. The plant doesn't require any special care providing bio fertilizers and irrigation would help to increase yield .it will start flowering after 2 months from the time of planting and continue to produce fruits for longer period.
Nutritive value:- the fruits contain fiber, vitamin c, potassium and calcium.
Medicinal value:- powdered clove bean are known remedy to fever. Plants juice is sprayed to kill bugs.
Food value:- tender fruits are used for cooking. The fruits are prepared into tasty curries as brinjal.
Seeds are used to plant clove beans. The main advantage of this plant is we will get the result within 1-2 months. We can cultivate the clove beans in all seasons. Clean the land and lay the seeds in the soil. In rainy reason no need of irrigation, otherwise apply some water. Germination of the seeds will happen in some days. Once the plant grows you need to transplant it outdoor to a fence/trellis as it is a vine crop. You may use twigs, pipes, bamboo sticks or whatever properties that aids the plant to grow upward towards the sunlight. This plant not needs any special fertilizers or pesticides. It’s enriched with fiber, calcium, potassium, vitamin c etc.
