ഏകദേശം 400 BCE മുതൽ പത്താം നൂറ്റാണ്ട് വരെ ഈ പ്രദേശം മുഴുവൻ ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന നാവിക-വ്യാപാര ശക്തിയായ അക്‌സുമൈറ്റ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ [2][3][4] ചരിത്രപരമായ തലസ്ഥാനമാണിത്. 1980-ൽ യുനെസ്‌കോ ആക്‌സത്തിന്റെ പുരാവസ്തു സൈറ്റുകളെ അവയുടെ ചരിത്രപരമായ മൂല്യം കണക്കിലെടുത്ത് ലോക പൈതൃക പട്ടികയിൽ ചേർത്തു.

അദ്വാ പർവതനിരകളുടെ അടിത്തട്ടിനടുത്ത് ടൈഗ്രേ മേഖലയിലെ സെൻട്രൽ സോണിലാണ് ആക്‌സം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇതിന് 2,131 മീറ്റർ (6,991 അടി) ഉയരമുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ ടിഗ്രേ മേഖലയിലെ വെവ്വേറെ ഭരണത്തിലുള്ള വോറെഡയായ ലൈലേ മെയ്ച്യൂവാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
