തമിഴ് ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ജനങ്ങളെ തമിഴർ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലാണ് ഇവരിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും. 3000 ഓളം പഴക്കമുള്ള ചരിത്രത്തിനു ഉടമകളാണിവർ. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിൽ കുടിയേറുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ് സിന്ധുനദീതടങ്ങളിലും പോളിനേഷ്യയിലുമായിരുന്നു ഇവരുടെ പൂർവികർ. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ മാത്രമല്ല തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് സിംഗപ്പൂർ , മലേഷ്യ , ശ്രീലങ്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
