തമിഴ് ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ജനങ്ങളെ തമിഴര്‍ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലാണ്‌ ഇവരില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും. 3000 ഓളം പഴക്കമുള്ള ചരിത്രത്തിനു ഉടമകളാണിവര്‍. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയില്‍ കുടിയേറുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ് സിന്ധുനദീതടങ്ങളിലും പോളിനേഷ്യയിലുമായിരുന്നു ഇവരുടെ പൂര്‍വികര്‍. ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് സിംഗപ്പൂര്‍ , മലേഷ്യ , ശ്രീലങ്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
