ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ മുൻപ്രസിഡണ്ടാണ് ജേക്കബ് സുമ (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്:Jacob Zuma) (ജനനം:12 ഏപ്രിൽ 1942). ഭരണകക്ഷിയായ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസിന്റെ പ്രസിഡണ്ട് കൂടിയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം.1999 മുതൽ 2005 വരെയുള്ള കാലയളവിൽ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ ഉപപ്രസിഡണ്ട് സ്ഥാനം വഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. 2007 ഡിസംബർ 18 -നാണ് നിലവിലെ അധ്യക്ഷൻ തബോ മ്ബേയ്കിയെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് ജേക്കബ് സുമ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസിന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷപദവിയിലെത്തുന്നത്. മുൻപ് സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടിയിലായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം 1990-ൽ പാർട്ടി വിടുമ്പോൾ പോളിറ്റ് ബ്യൂറോ അംഗങ്ങളിലൊരാളായിരുന്നു.

സുമക്ക് ഗുരുതരമായ നിയമനടപടികളെ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2005-ൽ ബലാത്സംഗത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരെ കേസെടുത്തെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് കുറ്റവിമുക്തനാക്കി. ഇതിനു പുറമേ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സാമ്പത്തികോപദേഷ്ടാവായിരുന്ന ഷബീർ ഷെയ്ക്ക്, അഴിമതി-വഞ്ചനാക്കുറ്റങ്ങളിൽ കുറ്റക്കാരനാണെന്നു തെളിഞ്ഞതോടെ അഴിമതിയും റാക്കറ്റ് സംബന്ധികളുമായ ആരോപണങ്ങൾ സുമക്കെതിരെയും ഉയർന്നു വന്നു. ഇതിനെ തുടർന്ന് നീണ്ട നിയമയുദ്ധങ്ങളിൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനേർപ്പെടേണ്ടി വന്നു. മൂന്നു ഭാര്യമാരിലായി 19 കുട്ടികളുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജേക്കബ് സുമക്ക് വിവാഹേതര ബന്ധത്തിൽ മറ്റൊരു കുട്ടിയുണ്ടായി എന്ന ആരോപണം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അംഗീകരിക്കേണ്ടതായി വന്നു. വിവാദത്തിനിടയാക്കിയ സൊനോനോ ഖോസയുടെ നാലുമാസം പ്രായമുളള പെൺകുട്ടിയുടെ പിതാവ് താനാണെന്നും കുട്ടിയുടെയും അമ്മയുടെയും സാമ്പത്തികച്ചെലവുകൾ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുമെന്നും പരസ്യമായി പ്രസ്താവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു.^[5]

ലിബിയയിൽ ജനാധിപത്യ പ്രക്ഷോഭം ശക്തമായ വേളയിൽ ഭരണാധികാരിയായ കേണൽ ഗദ്ദാഫിയുമായും പ്രക്ഷോഭകാരികളുമായും ചർച്ചകൾ നടത്തി സമാധാനം പുനഃസ്ഥാപിക്കുവാനുള്ള ജേക്കബ് സുമയുടെ ശ്രമങ്ങൾ രാജ്യാന്തരതലത്തിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ നേടുകയുണ്ടായി.
